For regular overlay purposes only, you can also use RTSS by itself without needing Afterburner or CapFrameX.

Go to RTSS Setup > Plugins > Enable the OverlayEditor.dll > Setup > Set and configure the overlay metrics you want, order, and the visual layout. Also, configure 'Statistics properties' in RTSS Setup > General to your liking and for your needs.

Make sure the 'Show on-screen display', 'On-screen display support', and 'Show own statistics' settings are ON in the RTSS 'General properties' and 'Application profile properties' sections.

You can also enable and customize the built-in HotkeyHandler.dll plugin to control the toggles for some RTSS monitoring, capture, and overlay features.

Then I don't know what you're expecting. You use a tool that's only for providing an overlay together with a tool thats only for providing sensor data. How much more "lightweight" could someting be?

Either way, CapFrameX is a benchmarking tool. The overlay and sensor service are additions to the basic functionality of CapFrameX, so if anything, a lightweight version of CapFrameX wouldn't even have an overlay

Actually Riva Tuner was light weigh when it worked, but it doesn't work for me anymore.

Regarding the above lightweight alternatives suggestions, and if limited overlay capabilities is all that's required, I would suggest Intel PresentMon is the de facto lightweight standard, seeing as it underpins even CFX itself and doesn't require additional tools.
However, the overlay capabilities of CFX are above and beyond everything else I've tested, with unique things like monitor refresh rate, which is excellent when testing VRR. Which is why I've decided on it despite only ever needing live overlay and absolutely nothing else.
So, while asking for a separate, lightweight, overlay only variant is perhaps a bit much, I would suggest a CLI parameter to start CFX that disables all the other functionality, so nothing runs that doesn't need to run, no unnecessary drivers are loaded and, if somehow this becomes possible in the future, admin rights are no longer required. As to why you would bother, that's simple: I suspect that at least one third if not more of your userbase is in this position, meaning they only use CFX to help find the right balance of setting for their games when they begin playing them and/or monitor performance/temps during gameplay.

On the subject of a complete redesign, I feel like I have to bring this up: since you're already integrating (part of?) PresentMon, which comes with it's own overlay functionality, would it be feasible to switch to that, while keeping all the bells and whistles that CFX's overlay has, like multi-profile, styling etc.? Is PresentMon's overlay implementation capable of beeing used in such a manner? It would be very nice to drop the RTSS external dependency. Also, if the switch were possible, as a bonus, I think remember reading something along the lines of them dropping the need for admin rights(or, at least, working to that end). Don't know what else in CFX's overlay stack requires elevation, but, I'm sure having one less tool in the chain that demands it can only be a good thing.

I agree with Taxxor90. If you actually check the disk space of, for example, the portable version of this benchmarking tool, having perhaps around 10 captures or so, it doesn't exceed 100 MB. Obviously, this will increase the more captures you save. However, if you don't use that capture functionality and only use the overlay, it weighs only around 60-70 MB (I don't remember exactly), so I don't understand why it should be made more "lightweight". I think it's already quite lightweight as it is.

The overlay feature is already very efficient in terms of performance impact. The full application's footprint is minimal considering all the analysis and monitoring tools you get with it.

It would also be annoying having to maintain two different versions so a possible lightweight version would probably just turn out to be a version that's the exact same under the hood but with some UI elements disabled

In my understanding "lightweight" means a less feature-rich UI reduced to a specific core functionality.
