Switch to typescript

I'd like to use typescript throughout entire project. Originally didn't to be more accessible to beginners. But I like typescript and it really could help with maintaining the code.

My TypeScript is good enough to convert a good amount of files, but I'll let you know if any files give me trouble in particular.

This is a large undertaking. I'd encourage splitting into multiple PRs. Definitely let me know if you are having trouble, but also if you want some input on some of the decisions that will need to be made.

I was thinking about breaking this up into several PRs. Maybe I'll try and go folder by folder.
