Scene Viewer crashes on Android devices when launching AR from model-viewer

Description

Scene Viewer crashes immediately or after a few seconds when launching AR
on multiple Android devices. This is happening on our WebAR SaaS platform
(ScanAR) and affects multiple device types.

Affected Devices

• Redmi (MIUI V816.0.8.0.TGCMIXM, Android 13)
• Multiple other Android devices

Steps to Reproduce

1. Open this URL on Android Chrome:
2. Upload or view any GLB model
3. Click "View in AR" button
4. Scene Viewer launches but crashes immediately

Error

JNI DETECTED ERROR: java_class == null
ImplModelView.nSetMode crash in com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox

Expected Behavior

Model should appear in AR on detected floor surface

Actual Behavior

Google app (Scene Viewer) crashes to home screen

Additional Notes

• Same crash happens on other WebAR sites (AR Code etc.)
• iPhone AR works perfectly with Quick Look
• Desktop 3D preview works fine
• This appears to be a Google-side regression

The URL is missing from your description. If you are passing a blob: URL to the model src, that is likely the cause of the crash.

Scene Viewer is an external native Android app and cannot access browser-scoped blob: URLs because they only exist within the browser process. As a result, Scene Viewer cannot load the model.

To fix this, you have two options:

1. Use a public URL
   Host the .glb file on a publicly accessible HTTPS endpoint (CDN, object storage, etc.) and use that URL as the src.
2. Prioritize WebXR
   Use:

   ar-modes="webxr quick-look scene-viewer"

   WebXR runs entirely within the browser context, so it can work with blob-backed models. iOS devices will still use Quick Look as usual.
