Description

Perform a feasibility and implementation analysis for supporting application deployment on Podman-based runtimes, covering both Docker Compose and Helm-based application definitions.

Scope

1. Podman Installation & Enablement

• Analyze Podman and podman-compose installation requirements on target VMs.

2. Docker Compose on Podman

• Analyze how applications defined through Docker Compose can be deployed and managed using Podman (podman-compose/native compose support).
• Identify compatibility considerations, limitations, and required adaptations.

3. Helm Applications on Podman

• Analyze approaches for deploying Helm chart-based applications on Podman, including Helm template rendering and conversion of Kubernetes resources to Podman-compatible deployments.
• Identify supported and unsupported Kubernetes constructs.

4. Helm Chart Design for Podman

• Define assumptions, best practices, and development guidelines for creating Helm charts that can be deployed on Podman-based runtimes with minimal modifications.

5. Programmatic Deployment Support

• Analyze code and automation changes required to deploy, manage, monitor, update, and remove applications on Podman runtimes.
• Assess integration requirements with Podman APIs/CLI and the impact on existing deployment workflows.

Expected Outcome

A recommendation and gap analysis covering:

• Podman installation and enablement requirements.
• Docker Compose compatibility with Podman. - Define improvements to compose manifest workloads when targeting typical targets(Docker/Podman) specification#168 (comment)
• Helm deployment feasibility on Podman runtimes.
• Helm chart portability and design guidelines.
• Platform and code changes required to support automated application lifecycle management on Podman-based environments.

Podman & podman-compose Installation on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

Assumption: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is a supported operating system for this deployment. The following steps can be used to install Podman and podman-compose on a machine running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Ubuntu provides Podman through its standard repositories and this is the recommended installation method.

Install the Latest Available Podman Version

First, update the package metadata:

sudo apt update

Install Podman, podman-compose from the Ubuntu repositories:

sudo apt install -y podman podman-compose

Verify the installation:

podman --version
podman info
podman-compose --version

This installs the latest Podman & podman-compose version available for the configured Ubuntu 24.04 repositories. For

If a specific Podman, podman-compose version is required, first determine the available versions:

apt list -a podman

apt list -a podman-compose

Install the required version by specifying it explicitly:

sudo apt install -y podman=<version>

sudo apt install -y podman-compose=<version>

Example:

sudo apt install -y podman=4.9.3+ds1-1ubuntu0.2

sudo apt install -y podman-compose=1.0.6-1

Verify the installed version:

podman --version
podman-compose --version

Alternative: Install podman-compose Using pip3

If a newer version of podman-compose is required than the version available in the Ubuntu repositories, it can be installed using Python's package manager (pip3). python & pip should be preinstalled. Here, pip & pip3 can be used interchangeably.

Install podman-compose for the current user:

pip3 install --user podman-compose

Alternatively, to upgrade an existing installation:

pip3 install --user --upgrade podman-compose

If the user-local binary path is not already configured, add it to the shell PATH:

echo 'export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.bashrc
source ~/.bashrc

Verify the installed podman-compose version:

podman-compose version

pip3 show podman-compose

View Available podman-compose Versions and Install a Specific Version

List all versions of podman-compose available on PyPI:

pip3 index versions podman-compose

Example output:

podman-compose (1.5.0)
Available versions: 1.5.0, 1.4.0, 1.3.0, 1.2.0

Install a specific version by using the == operator:

pip3 install --user podman-compose==<version>

Example:

pip3 install --user podman-compose==1.3.0

Verify the installed version:

podman-compose version

Alternatively:

pip3 show podman-compose

Example output:

Name: podman-compose
Version: 1.3.0

Note:
Podman containers running in a rootless user session will not automatically start after a system reboot unless user lingering is enabled for that user. If boot persistence of containers is required, enable user lingering as part of the post-installation steps after Podman is installed.

Enable User Lingering

Run the following command as a privileged user (replace <username> with the target user):

sudo loginctl enable-linger <username>

Verify that lingering is enabled:

loginctl show-user <username> --property=Linger

Expected Output:

Linger=yes
