Feature Request: Add SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to the SQL Workload #184

Open

Description

@snappercayt

Is your feature request related to a problem?

Currently, setting up a Windows development environment with WindowsDeveloperConfig provides a convenient way to install developer tools and workloads.

However, developers working with Microsoft SQL Server also need SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to manage database instances, execute queries, inspect database schemas, manage security, and perform database administration tasks.

Having to download and install SSMS separately is an additional manual step when setting up a new development machine.

Describe the solution you'd like

I would like to request adding SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to the existing SQL workload.

Ideally, running the SQL workload should install SSMS automatically alongside the existing SQL development tools.

For example:

powershell

winget configure -f .\Workloads\sql\configuration.winget --accept-configuration-agreements --disable-interactivity

The installation could use the official Microsoft SSMS package available through WinGet.

Expected benefits

  • Simplifies setting up a complete SQL Server development environment.
  • Eliminates the need to manually download and install SSMS.
  • Provides a consistent developer experience across new Windows machines.
  • Makes the SQL workload more complete for developers working with Microsoft SQL Server.

Acceptance criteria

  • [ ]Add SQL Server Management Studio to the existing SQL workload.
  • [ ]Use the official Microsoft distribution/package.
  • [ ]Ensure installation is compatible with the existing automated and non-interactive setup.
  • [ ]Ensure the installation is idempotent and safe to run multiple times.
  • [ ]Update the SQL workload documentation to mention SSMS.

Additional context

Official SSMS download and documentation:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/ssms/install/install

Thank you for maintaining this project! Adding SSMS would make the SQL workload even more useful for .NET and SQL Server developers.
