Big Sur / Found an unexpected naming record at ... BeaconNamingRecord ...

Hi,

i updated my old Mid 2009 Macbook Pro to Big Sur to be able to export my Airtags.

When i start OpenTagViewer 1.0.4 (which supports macos 11.x) i get the following error:
"Found an unexpected naming record at /Users/myusername/Library/com.apple.icloud.searchpartyd/BeaconNamingRecord/xxx.record!"
xxx is a log id which i can provide if you need it.

However the export seems to work fine. But when i try to import the zip file in die android app it can be added but i can't see a location. Also - after adding - i get an error message "Importerror. Please restart app and.. [can't read the complete message]" (tranlated from german).

I also tried to export one tag at a time or my iphone but i can't see any location.

You might be getting affected by the same issue as the second user here: #39 (comment)

But I am curious what the app logs would report for your tags given as you got that error. Could you enable debug mode in the settings and export the app logs and attach them here (make sure you check the logs and steip out any personally identifiable information before you add the log here)?

I am not exactly sure where I can find dedicated debug informations or logs but after enabling the switch, I could see this regarding the single tags.

Is that what you meant?

Now I tried to export again using another MacBook with MacOS 14 and got the same error.

After I changed the anisete server I got two of five devices working in the app but the location isn't updated in the OpenTagViewer. On the Mac I see the current location but on the phone it's still the old location.
The corresponding iPhone is not nearby so this should work I think.

What I don't understand:

• Why do only 2 Devices "work"?
• Why won't the location update itself?

Makes it look like one of your exported plist files are missing an XML key called secureLocationsSharedSecret for whatever reason. So technically yes it's related to the export (and I would imagine the tags that do work don't have this issue because they probably have all the necessary keys for the library to initialise the tags correctly) -- but I think for some reason that tag doesn't have a properly exportable data file in general.

Not getting updates on some tags "sometimes" likely relates to #30 and being able to understand that will become easier once #30 is done/implemented. That issue would look like the logs indicating "it succeeded at fetching latest tag updates" but it returning "0 new updates". But the error you posted above is definitely unrelated to #30 and wouldn't be fixed by it to my knowledge.

So to address this secureLocationsSharedSecret issue, I would be interested if you could use the standalone decryptor script and decrypt all the files on your MacOS device. Then try to identify what the difference is between the tags that do show updates versus the ones that do not.

I used the python script now to export/decrypt everything manually.

In the folder "BeaconNamingRecord" are 6 folders (every single one contains a plist file).
When looking into the files i can find an iPhone, an Insta360 Go camera and 4 AirTags which are identified correctly.

The folder "OwnedBeacons" contains 7 plist files.

The additional plist file which doesn't occur in "BeaconNamingRecord" is unknown - BUT it contains a "secureLocationSharedSecret" (here ist a part of the file):

About the updates:

• The iPhone (1) never got a location and is shown in the list of devices in OpenTagViewer but not on the map
• Same for the Insta360 Camera (2) (which is turned off and also doesn't show a location on the iPhone

Regarding the AirTags

• Two (3 and 4) show updates regularly
• One (5) shows a location but isn't updated since the import
• One (6) never got a location and is shown in the list of devices in OpenTagViewer but not on the map
  (A difference maybe that I shared this AirTag with another person via the Apple App)

So in the end only 3 of 6 devices are shown on the Map in OpenTagViewer and only 2 get regular updates.

Before I used OpenTagViewer and before I exported the files I deleted and re-paired 3 of the 4 AirTags again to the Apple account. So the "Pairing Date" of them is the 27th and 28th of December 2025.
Of the 3 re-paired tags only 2 show regular updates, but 3 are shown in the map.

The last AirTag is paired since September 2025 and isn't shown on the map. I will re-pair it now to see if that also helps.

Edit: after turning off the iPhone and the MacBook suddenly the iPhone appears on the map of OpenTagViewer.

Edit: now the last (repaired) Airtag is also shown on the map. So that helped.

Edit: After logging out and in again I can also see the Insta360 camera
