porg - Paper Organization Tool

porg is a native macOS app for organizing research papers: where each paper lives (source URL + local PDF), its tags and project — browseable and filterable in a Notion-style table.

porg is almost completely written by Claude Code.

Installation

Install the project in editable mode:

pip install -e .

Launch the app:

porg-gui

Data

porg stores its data in ~/.porg/library.json. Each paper has a title, conference, one or more URLs, a local PDF path, tags, and a project. Nothing else is required to get started — there's no account to connect and no external service involved.

Keeping PDF paths honest

porg doesn't watch the filesystem for moved or renamed PDFs. Instead:

  • Sync PDF paths (top bar) checks every paper's recorded PDF against disk and clears the path for any file it can't find, so the table's PDF status reflects reality.
  • Each paper's detail panel lets you Choose file… to re-link a moved PDF, or Remove to clear the path yourself.

Last Read and sorting

The "Last Read" column reflects the PDF file's filesystem access time — read live off disk, not something porg tracks itself. A paper with no PDF on hand (or one that's never been opened) shows no last-read date.

By default the table is sorted by last read, newest first. Click the Title or Last Read column header to sort by it: the first click sorts ascending, the second descending, and the third returns to the default order.

Packaging as a macOS app

pip install -e ".[macapp]"
python setup_app.py py2app

Packaging requires Python >= 3.10 (py2app's floor), separate from the Python >= 3.8 the rest of porg supports.
