Basic explanation

What this does: Some document types run a contest (a masternode vote) for a unique value, such as a DPNS name. fieldMatches decides which documents join the contest. From protocol version 15, this PR requires that decision to depend only on the index values. Two documents with the same values are then always both in the contest or both outside it. Registration refuses a contest that reads anything else. For a contract registered earlier, a document created outside such a contest is refused while a contest for the same values is open.

Value: A contest's winner can always be stored, because no document outside the contest can hold the value first. DPNS and every contract registered on mainnet and testnet today already meet the rule.

Risks: Low.

  • It is a consensus change at protocol version 15 only. Protocol version 14 and earlier behave exactly as before.
  • Existing contracts are not affected: they still load and are not re-checked.
  • The extra lookup runs only for a type whose contest fails the rule, which no type on either network does today, so DPNS fees are unchanged.

Issue being fixed or feature implemented

A document joins its type's contest when every fieldMatches entry matches it, and documents with the same index values share one unique index entry. Nothing ties the two together, so the index values alone may not decide whether a document is contested:

  • A field outside the index: a fieldMatches field that is not one of the index's properties.
  • A match that can tell "" from "\0": these two strings share one index key (DocumentPropertyType::encode_value_for_tree_keys). This only matters on a string property that may be empty.

In either case a document outside the contest can take the unique index entry the contest awards at its end.

Related: #4784 proposes a wider set of contested-parameter rules for a later release. This PR is the protocol version 15 part that keeps the award's entry free.

Before: this index registers at every protocol version. The contest matches on label, which is not part of the index.

{
  "name": "parentNameAndLabel",
  "properties": [{ "normalizedParentDomainName": "asc" }, { "normalizedLabel": "asc" }],
  "unique": true,
  "contested": {
    "fieldMatches": [{ "field": "label", "regexPattern": "^[a-z01]{3,19}$" }],
    "resolution": 0
  }
}

After: at protocol version 15 it is refused (InvalidContractStructure, 10231). DPNS's index, matching normalizedLabel with ^[a-zA-Z01-]{3,19}$, still registers.

What was done?

  • One rule (dpp): Index::contest_is_decided_by_index_values in data_contract/document_type/index/contest_decided_by_values.rs. It requires that:

    • every fieldMatches field is a property of the index;
    • a match on a string property without minLength ≥ 1 treats "" and "\0" alike.

    An index without a contest passes, and so does a contest without fieldMatches.

  • Registration (dpp): refuse_a_contest_not_decided_by_index_values in try_from_schema/common/mod.rs runs in full validation after the index properties are checked. It dispatches on check_document_type_schema: 0 refuses nothing, 1 (protocol version 15) refuses with InvalidContractStructure.

  • Document create (drive-abci): state_v3 in document_create_transition_action is v2 plus one check. For a create without a prefunded voting balance, on a type whose contest fails the rule, it looks up the poll for the document's index values with the existing fetch_contested_document_vote_poll_stored_info (the read is billed). While that poll is Started, the create is refused with DuplicateUniqueIndexError.

  • Versions:

    • DRIVE_ABCI_VALIDATION_VERSIONS_V11 (protocol version 15 only) selects document_create_transition_state_validation: 3.
    • v15.rs notes 7 and 16 describe the change.
  • Book: the rule is added to the registration rules in contract-keywords/contested.md.

How Has This Been Tested?

  • try_from_schema/v3/contest_decided_by_index_values_tests.rs (dpp, 7 tests):
    • refused: a field outside the index, and a match telling "" from "\0" on a string that may be empty;
    • registered: protocol version 14 still accepts the shape; a field of the index; the same match on a string with minLength 1; a contest without fieldMatches;
    • a stored contract with the shape still loads.
  • state_transitions/mod.rs, module contest_decided_by_index_values (drive-abci, 4 tests). The new fixture tests/supporting_files/contract/dpns/dpns-contract-contested-field-match-outside-index.json is a DPNS-like contract whose contest matches label. The tests cover:
    • protocol version 14 keeps its old behaviour;
    • the latest version refuses registration;
    • for a contract stored as if registered earlier, a second document with the same index values is refused while the contest is open, and the award succeeds;
    • a control case with other index values.
  • Commands run:
    • cargo test -p dpp --lib contest_decided_by_index_values_tests: 7 passed
    • cargo test -p drive-abci --lib contest_decided_by_index_values: 4 passed
    • cargo test -p drive-abci --lib -- contest dpns: 162 passed, 2 ignored (already ignored before this change)
    • cargo test -p dpp --lib contested: 99 passed
    • cargo test -p dpp --test contract_corpus: 8 passed
    • cargo test -p platform-version --lib: 29 passed
    • cargo clippy -p dpp -p drive-abci -p platform-version --all-targets --all-features -- --no-deps -D warnings: clean
  • Contracts on the networks: the contract corpus and every contract create and update on mainnet and testnet were checked against the rule. None fails it, so no registered contract changes behaviour.

In-place changes to shipped generations

  • Shared parser core (try_from_schema/common/mod.rs, used by parser generations 0 to 3, which protocol versions 1 to 15 select): it gains a call to refuse_a_contest_not_decided_by_index_values. Consensus cannot change at protocol version 14 or earlier because the call dispatches on check_document_type_schema, which is 0 in CONTRACT_VERSIONS_V1 to V6, and version 0 returns Ok(()) without reading anything.

Breaking Changes

Consensus at protocol version 15:

  • registering or updating a contract whose contest its index values do not decide is refused;
  • a document created outside such a contest, on a contract registered earlier, is refused while a contest for the same values is open.

Protocol version 14 and earlier are unchanged.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • From protocol version 15, contract registration rejects contested indexes when contest membership depends on fields outside the index or distinguishes empty strings from NUL values that share an index key.
  • Bug Fixes
    • While a contest is active, document creation is rejected if it would use the same index values, even when the document would otherwise fall outside the contest. This protection also applies to contests in contracts registered before version 15.
    • Contracts registered before version 15 with contested indexes that violate the new rules can no longer be updated.

A document joins its type's contest when every `fieldMatches` entry matches
it, and documents with the same index values share one unique index entry.
A `fieldMatches` field outside the index, or a match telling "" from "\0"
(which share an index key) on a string that may be empty, lets a document
outside the contest take the index values of a document in it, and the
award at the end of the contest then finds its entry taken.

From protocol version 15:
- registration refuses such a contest (`check_document_type_schema` 1,
  `InvalidContractStructure`), decided once by
  `Index::contest_is_decided_by_index_values`;
- document create state validation 3 refuses a create outside the contest,
  on a type registered earlier with such a contest, while a contest for the
  same values is live (`DuplicateUniqueIndexError`). Only such a type pays
  the lookup, so a DPNS domain create costs what it did.

Protocol version 14 and earlier are unchanged.

Walkthrough

Protocol v15 adds schema-registration checks for contested indexes and document-create state validation for contests not decided by their index values. Tests cover schema rules, live-contest behavior, and protocol-version differences.

Changes: Contested index validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Registration checks and index predicate

The index predicate checks whether contest membership is determined by index values. Full schema validation rejects indexes that fail this check under schema-validation version 1. Tests and documentation cover out-of-index match fields, empty-string/NUL matching, and protocol-version behavior.

State-validation version 3 checks for a live contest when the contest is not decided by its index values. A conflicting create returns a duplicate-unique-index error when the matching poll is started. Regression tests cover protocol versions 14 and 15, index-value cases, and contest resolution.

92-103: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Cover the out-of-index contest refusal on the update path.

The new out-of-index fixture is loaded only by create-path tests. No update test keeps a contest whose fieldMatches names a property outside the index. A regression in the update validation path would therefore leave every test passing. This is a coverage gap, not a current update failure.

Add a data_contract_update test that submits an update at protocol version 15 that keeps such a contest. The test should expect InvalidContractStructure.

Add a state-level create test for the "" and "\0" normalized-label alias.

The new create tests use only non-empty normalized labels (quantum, quantun). An implementation that ignores the alias passes them unchanged. Add a legacy-contract create test with one empty-string and one "\0" normalized label. Assert that the second create is refused while the contest is live. The test covers the runtime path that state_v3 leaves unchecked for this alias.

…ex value

A unique index entry holding a null is kept per document, not under the one
key a contest's award takes, so such a create takes nothing from a contest:
state validation 3 no longer looks up the poll or refuses it.

Also adds a test that, from protocol version 15, an update keeping a contest
its index values do not decide is refused (InvalidContractStructure), and
says so in the v15 note and the book.

Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The PV15 registration rule and legacy-contract guard are correctly version-gated; no blocking defect was confirmed. The proposed same-batch bypass is unreachable because production validation limits document batches to one transition, but the null-index exemption lacks regression coverage and the guard's encoding comment is inaccurate. This was a static review of b0c57a8; current CI has Rust workspace tests and the JS build pending, with no failed code checks reported.

In `packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/action_validation/document/document_create_transition_action/state_v3/mod.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/action_validation/document/document_create_transition_action/state_v3/mod.rs:96-100: Add regression coverage for the null-index exemption
  The new null-value early return is not exercised by the added tests: the fixture requires both contested index properties, and create_domain always supplies them. Removing this guard would therefore leave those tests passing while incorrectly refusing legitimate non-contested creates whose null-bearing unique entries are stored per document. Add a legacy-contract case with an optional contested index property omitted, open a contest for those null-bearing values, and verify that a non-contested create with a different document ID succeeds and the contest can finalize. A focused execution-context assertion should also verify that this guard adds no poll-lookup fee when it skips the read; retain the existing non-null rejection as the control.
- [NITPICK] packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/action_validation/document/document_create_transition_action/state_v3/mod.rs:75-76: Correct the comment about empty-string and NUL poll lookups
  The guard does catch this split for legacy contracts. fetch_contested_document_vote_poll_stored_info derives its path through VotePollPaths::contenders_path and serialize_value_for_vote_poll_key, which uses generation-0 tree-key encoding. That encoding maps both the empty string and the single NUL string to [0], so either value finds the same live poll and is rejected. Update the comment so it does not describe an encoding-based protection as a known gap.

…ing key in the contest guard

- A create leaving a contested index property out holds a null index value,
  whose unique index entry is kept per document: it is admitted beside a
  live contest, and the award goes through.
- A create of "\0" beside a live contest of "" (both encode to the index

  encodes the values as index keys. Corrects the guard's comment and the
  v15 note, which said this split was not caught.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Verified the exact head 063221f: both prior findings are fixed, and the new behavior is isolated to PV15. One remaining storage-layout mismatch incorrectly rejects legitimate empty-byte-array creates beside a live contest. This was a static review without builds or tests; current CI still has package determination and Kotlin build/tests pending, with no completed Rust build/test result available.

In `packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/action_validation/document/document_create_transition_action/state_v3/mod.rs`:
- [BLOCKING] packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/batch/action_validation/document/document_create_transition_action/state_v3/mod.rs:96-100: Base the contest exemption on encoded index keys
  The writer's per-document layout applies to more than `Value::Null`. `DocumentPropertyType::encode_value_for_tree_keys` encodes an empty byte array as an empty key; `add_indices_for_index_level_for_contract_operations/v2/mod.rs:401` sets `any_fields_null` from the encoded key's emptiness, and `add_reference_for_index_level_for_contract_operations/v0/mod.rs:163` consequently stores the entry under its document ID. Indexed byte-array properties require bounded `maxItems`, but need not have positive `minItems`.

  On a legacy immutable type with a contested unique index `[blob, normalizedLabel]` and `fieldMatches` on a separate label, open a contest with an empty `blob`, then submit a different-ID, nonmatching document with the same index values. This null-only exemption misses it, so the subsequent live-poll lookup rejects the create with a paid `DuplicateUniqueIndexError`, although its entry cannot collide with the eventual winner's per-document entry.

  Expose or reuse a Drive-owned shared-entry predicate based on the insertion path's key encoding, and use it before the poll lookup rather than adding another raw-value exception in ABCI. Add a regression that admits the empty-byte-array create beside the live contest and verifies successful resolution.

…keys, not null values

Drive keeps a unique index entry per document, apart from the key a contest
awards, whenever one of its index keys is empty: a missing value, but also
an empty byte array. The guard exempted only null values, so it refused a
create holding an empty byte array beside a live contest although its entry
could not meet the winner's.

`drive::document::shared_unique_entry::unique_index_entry_is_shared` reads
each level's key with the call the insert walkers make (`level_keys`) and
says whether the entry sits under the shared key; the guard asks it before
the poll lookup. Adds a test admitting an empty byte array create beside a
live contest, and updates the v15 note.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

Static verification of the complete diff at 92811e8 found no remaining actionable correctness, architecture, or versioning issues, and all four prior findings are addressed. The registration restriction and live-contest guard are isolated to PV15, with encoded-key exemptions and read-fee accounting consistent with the existing storage paths. No builds or tests were run; current CI shows runner selection, changed-package detection, book preview, and PR Hygiene pending, so Rust build and test success for this head remains unconfirmed.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 2 only (queue backlog)

Reviewed the complete diff at head 1b0b8a4 and verified that all four prior findings are fixed. No blocking defects remain; one non-blocking suggestion requests focused regression coverage for the newly billed poll lookup. This was a static review: current CI reports successful Rust workspace tests and executed SDK/build checks, with PR Hygiene still pending.

In `packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/mod.rs`:
- [SUGGESTION] packages/rs-drive-abci/src/execution/validation/state_transition/state_transitions/mod.rs:4569-4575: Assert fee accounting for the new legacy-contest lookup
  This assertion checks the paid error but ignores `actual_fees`, and the other new execution tests likewise check outcomes without verifying the lookup's fee contribution. For paths that actually perform the read, the tests therefore do not protect the `PrecalculatedOperation` insertion in `state_v3/mod.rs:142–145`: dropping that insertion would leave their asserted outcomes unchanged while undercharging the lookup. Add focused execution-context assertions for both live-poll rejection and missing-poll success, isolating the extra read's fee—for example, by comparing v2 and v3 validation of equivalent actions against the same state and platform version. A nonzero total-fee assertion is insufficient because earlier validation already incurs fees.

validation 2 and 3, with a live contest and without one, and assert that

precalculated operation. Dropping that operation now fails both tests.

Re-review — Final validation — Phase 1 + Phase 2

The complete diff at a803206 has no confirmed actionable issues: PV15 gates the new behavior, the exemptions match Drive's index layout, and the additional poll read is billed before admission or rejection. All five prior findings are addressed. No local builds or tests were run; current CI reports Rust workspace tests, the JS build, Kotlin checks, and Swift checks passing, with the dashmate and platform-test-suite JS tests still pending.
