fix(chat): keep pi's dialog cards when an extension adds a footer status line - #2639
With any pi extension that calls ctx.ui.setStatus (a usage meter, a worktree indicator), no pi
dialog card appears in Chat: /model, the thinking level, and extension selects, confirms and
inputs are all missing. pi still draws the dialog in the terminal.
pi 1.4.0 joins every extension status into a third footer line under the stats line, truncated to
the pane's width rather than wrapped. promptTailIsActive allowed only two footer lines (folder,
stats) under a pi hint, so the hint sat one line too far from the bottom, and the dialog was taken
for an answered one.
piFooterLines (server/dialogs/live.ts) now allows one more line, but only when:
it sits directly under pi's stats line, which is recognised by how it starts (↑ ↓ R W CH $ or
the context meter), because a narrow pane cuts that line with ... before the meter
(… (sub) 3.7...); and
it is not a prompt: a composer's, or a shell's once pi has gone, starting with ❯ › > ➜ or $ /# , or ending with ❯ › > $ #. An ending % is not treated as a prompt, because usage
statuses end with one (usage 12%).
More than one line of later output still buries the hint, as before.
Not changed: the rpiv-ask-user-question reader (server/dialogs/pi-ask.ts) and pi-questionnaire.ts have their own footer checks, and pi-ask.test.ts asserts that any line
under the stats line rejects the card. Nothing on screen tells such a line from a status, so those
cards still disappear under a status line. Their meter check (\d+(?:\.\d+)?%\/\d) also misses a
stats line cut before its meter on a narrow pane. I left both alone, since loosening them means
changing that assertion; happy to open a follow-up issue if you want them to behave like the
built-in dialogs.
Validation
bun run check fast: 10735 pass, 31 skip, 0 fail (typecheck and build ok).
bun test server/prompt.test.ts server/dialogs server/conventions.test.ts: 806 pass.
New tests in server/prompt.test.ts use a /model screen captured from pi 1.4.0 at 68 columns
with a usage status line (paths anonymised). They cover the model list, the thinking selector
(wide and narrow), select, confirm and input. They also cover a stats line cut at 48 columns,
fresh 0.0%/200k and ?/200k stats lines, and statuses such as $0.42 today, #1234 open and usage 12%. Negatives: a buried hint, progress 50%/100 done in place of the stats line, and
composer and shell prompts (❯, ›, >, $ , # , bash, fish, oh-my-zsh).
The new tests fail without the fix.
Checked by hand: on a real pi 1.4.0 pane with a usage-status extension, the /model card appears
in Chat and works.
Skipped: bun run check full (no HTTP/WS or browser change), native Windows/macOS.

Bug Fixes
Pi’s model, thinking-level, menu, confirmation, and text-input dialogs remain visible in Chat when an extension adds a status line to the footer.
Prompt recognition now accounts for the additional footer line, while avoiding treating later output or prompt-like text as an active dialog.
Pi dialog checks now detect when a footer includes an extension status line and use the detected footer length when checking prompts. Tests cover Pi select, confirmation, text-input, thinking-level, and model-list prompts. A changelog entry describes the change.

Summary
Footer detection and dialog checks server/dialogs/live.ts, server/prompt.test.ts, changelog.d/pi-dialog-extension-status.md
Pi footer detection returns three lines when the penultimate line matches the stats prefix and the last line is not a recognized prompt; otherwise it returns two. Pi dialog checks use the detected footer length. Tests cover recognized prompts and rejection cases, including narrow layouts and truncated stats lines. The changelog describes the affected cards.
devswha/ovis#1670: This PR also changes how the Pi thinking-level selector is recognized as active.

Extend the questionnaire footer check for extension status lines.
157-158: Minor · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift
Extend the questionnaire footer check for extension status lines.
With an extension status line below pi's stats line, parsePiQuestionnaire returns null. Its footer check accepts only the stats line and the folder line above it. The questionnaire card then disappears, while the model and thinking cards stay visible. Update the footer handling in server/dialogs/pi-questionnaire.ts (lines 78-84) to accept the extra status line, and add a regression test for it. This failure predates this PR, which leaves that file unchanged.

Update the footer validation in parsePiQuestionnaire to accept an extension
status line below pi’s stats line while preserving the existing folder-and-stats
footer behavior; add a regression test confirming the questionnaire remains
visible when that status line is present.
Accept pi's status line in the pi-ask frame footer.
163-164: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Accept pi's status line in the pi-ask frame footer.
frame() in server/dialogs/pi-ask.ts accepts exactly two footer lines after the hint (footer.length !== 2, lines 31-35). When pi shows an extension status line under its stats line, the footer has a third line. frame() then returns null. parsePiAsk returns null, so the pi-ask-question and pi-ask-submit readers do not produce their cards from that screen.
piFooterLines in server/dialogs/live.ts already allows that extra line for the other pi dialogs. Apply the same rule to this footer. Allow a third line only when the second-to-last line matches pi's stats line and the last line is not a composer or shell prompt. Keep that rule in one place, such as shared.ts, rather than adding a second copy. Leave the other footer checks in frame() unchanged.
The pi-ask responders skip the footer-window gate in live.ts, so frame() is the only check on this footer. This PR does not change that check, so the card loss also occurs without this change.

Update the pi-ask footer handling so frame() accepts a third footer line only

composer or shell prompt. Keep this status-line rule centralized in shared.ts
and leave the other footer checks in frame() unchanged.

…er, and answer only while pi holds the pane
One line under a stats-looking line was taken for an extension's status unless it looked like a prompt, so pi's last dialog with one line of the shell's under it ('Killed', 'host%', a half-typed command) read as open and an answer pressed Enter into the shell. The extra line now needs pi's folder line and a real stats line above it (both counters, or the meter alone), and a key-driven pi card is offered, and each of its keys sent, only while pi (or omo, which herdr also names pi) holds the pane's input, as omp's already were. Test herdr stand-ins report their pi processes as pi.
Thanks @hrudek for tracking this down to pi 1.4.0's third footer line, and for the captured screens. Merge-pass review (Codex Terra xhigh and omo) reproduced one HIGH: a single non-prompt line under a stats-looking line counted as an extension's status, so pi's last dialog left on the screen when pi ended, with one line of the shell's under it (Killed, zsh's host%, user@host:~/app$ rm -rf build, progress 90%, or $1 total / ↑2 items in place of the stats line), read as an open card with the same id, and answering it pressed down down enter into the shell. Main shows no card there.
I pushed 0bc87e4 on top of your branch (after your 9fdbd35, no force):
the extra line counts only under pi's whole footer: its folder line, then a real stats line (both counters ↑… ↓…, or the meter alone);
a key-driven pi card is offered, and each of its keys sent, only while pi holds the pane's input (piOwnsInput, as ompOwnsInput does for omp; omo counts, since herdr names its panes pi). That also closes a pre-existing gap Terra found: pi's last check before a key re-read the dialog but never asked whether pi was still there. One consequence: a herdr that reports no foreground process for a pi pane gets no key-driven pi card (the terminal answers it), as omp's panes already do.
tests: Killed, host%, $ rm -rf build and progress 90% under a dialog once pi has ended (no card, no key), an answer under way when pi ends (stops after its first key), and stats-shaped or folder-less footers; they fail without the change. The test herdr stand-ins (outcome, pi-ask-user-route, pi-ask-route, pi-questionnaire-route) now report their pi processes as pi. bun run check fast passes.
…lect's last read checked against pi too
Windows lists no foreground process to tell a live pi from the shell under its last screen, so neither pi's dialogs nor its questionnaire take an extension's status line there (main's behaviour). Questionnaire cards answer by keys too, so they now need pi holding the pane like pi's own dialogs. A select or confirm answer compares by the dialog drawn, which pi leaves behind: pi must still hold the pane after the read right before each key as well.
Follow-up 2540b5f: Terra's delta found three more edges, now covered: on Windows (no foreground process to check) neither pi's dialogs nor the questionnaire take the extra status line, as on main; questionnaire cards, which answer by keys, now need pi holding the pane too; and a select or confirm answer checks pi still holds the pane after its last read, right before each key. omo's delta approved 0bc87e4 (its stale-questionnaire MEDIUM is the second item here). bun run check fast passes.
…ards
herdr names an omo pane pi too, and omo's cards there (its question form) keep their own checks; the ownership check now applies to pi's responders only, when a card is read and before each of its keys. Fixes the omo form contract test the previous commit broke.
Follow-up ff7d2f6: the integration run showed the ownership check also hid omo's question form on a pane herdr names pi (omo-prompt.contract.test.ts). It now applies to pi's own key-driven cards only (pi-* responders), when the card is read and before each key; omo's cards keep their own checks, as on main. That contract test passes locally; bun run check fast passes.
Thanks @hrudek for tracking this down to pi 1.4.0's third footer line, and for the questionnaire follow-up. pi's dialog cards (/model, thinking, extension select/confirm/input) and the questionnaire now stay in Chat when an extension adds a status line under pi's footer.
Merge-pass review (Codex Terra xhigh over three rounds, omo approve): the first version took any one non-prompt line under a stats-looking line for that status, so pi's last dialog left on screen when pi ended, with Killed, host% or a half-typed command under it, read as open and an answer pressed Enter into the shell. Fixed on this branch: the extra line counts only under pi's whole footer (folder line, then a real stats line); every key-driven pi card (dialogs and questionnaires) is offered, and each key sent, only while pi (or omo) holds the pane's input, checked again after the last read of a select or confirm; on Windows, which lists no foreground process, no extra status line is taken (main's behaviour). This also closes a pre-existing gap where pi's last check before a key never asked whether pi was still there. Tests cover the stale lines, an answer under way when pi ends and stats-shaped footers, and fail without the fixes.
Left as is: MEDIUM (safe direction) the questionnaire's footer check reads a status containing a meter-like 12.0%/200k as pi's stats line and hides the card; it duplicates the dialog parser's footer check, which is stricter. LOW: a herdr that reports no foreground process (or no argv) for a pi pane gets no key-driven card; the ownership check and the key are two calls, not one atomic step; one more process lookup per read and per key.
CodeRabbit's check shows skipping on this head; the merge pass and both reviewers reviewed it.
