What

Each release now also carries ChronoMock-app-win-x64.msi: the window and the command line for every account on the machine, installed into Program Files\Chrono Mock, with the window in the Start menu and the 64-bit chrono on the machine's PATH (the 32-bit one is core\x86\chrono.exe in the same folder). The two zips stay exactly as they are, and a release candidate gets no installer.

How

  • packaging/build-msi.ps1 builds it with WiX 5.0.2 (pinned, any other version is refused with the command that installs the right one) from the window package, and adds three things nowhere else adds them:

    • calendars\ and presets\ beside each core, so chrono on PATH reads the installed catalogue and never one from the folder it is started in (the lookup takes the folder beside the executable first, the working directory second),
    • installed.txt beside ChronoMock.exe, the marker that tells the window the installer owns the folder,
    • the installer's own README, because the package's says "no installer".

It then reads the built database back through COM: product version, upgrade code, Restart Manager off, no repair or modify, zero rows in CustomAction and Binary, and as many files as were staged. Every refusal of its inputs comes before WiX is looked for and is one line on stderr with exit 1. A package with a history or logs folder is refused, because a window run from it wrote somebody's own data there.

  • packaging/msi/chronomock.wxs: perMachine, no WiX extension, no custom action, no dialogs of WiX's own.

    • MajorUpgrade with AllowSameVersionUpgrades="yes" and Schedule="afterInstallInitialize". Our programs carry the product version, and Windows Installer replaces a file only when it is missing or older (REINSTALLMODE "omus", File Versioning Rules on MS Learn). With the new files laid down before the old product goes (afterInstallExecute), a rebuild under the same number would keep every old program and report success. Here the old product goes first, inside the same transaction, so a failed install puts it back. Read from the built database: InstallInitialize 1500, RemoveExistingProducts 1501.
    • MSIRESTARTMANAGERCONTROL=Disable. The injected library stays loaded in an application that outlived its session (ADR-14), so the program holding one of our files is often the application under test, and the Restart Manager would offer to close exactly that. A file in use is set aside instead, the new one is in place at once, and the installer answers 3010.
    • core\x64 on the machine PATH (Part="last", Permanent="no"), one Start menu shortcut starting the window in its install folder.
  • The window keeps nothing of its own in an installed folder. WritableFolder.Choose replaces the two copies of the choice the history store and the diagnostics log carried. An installed copy keeps both in %LOCALAPPDATA%\ChronoMock, also when it runs as administrator, and never probes the install folder (the probe itself created the folder it asked about). A portable copy behaves as before.

  • Release ritual.

    • Phase B (sign-release.ps1) asks, before the card signs anything, whether the installer can be built here and whether its inputs in the checkout are the tag's own. After repacking, it builds the installer from the signed window folder, signs it with the product name, reads the certificate back against the pin (Assert-SignedByPin, now shared with the programs), and gives it an SBOM, a checksum line and a digest for phase C.
    • Phase C (attest-signed.yml) attests the installer's SBOM, and fails when a release lacks the installer or a candidate carries one.
    • Phase D (verify-release.yml) expects the installer from 0.4.0 on, checks its signature against the pin, and reads a candidate's version without failing on the hyphen ([version] used to throw there).
    • The register (packaging/components.json) names the installer as package msi with contents: gui, and sbom.ps1 writes its document from the window package's components. The two zip SBOMs are unchanged.

Guards

  • crates/cli/tests/msi.rs (9 tests): the rendered source's shape (scope, schedule, Restart Manager, PATH, shortcut, folder), nothing of WiX's in it (namespace, forbidden elements), the signed name equals the carried name, version refusals, package refusals with WiX out of reach and nothing left behind, the names several files share (upgrade code, marker, installer file name, WiX version), one rule for a candidate in four places, the order and content of phase B, and the calls that keep the window's files out of the install folder. Registered in network.rs (it runs pwsh).
  • components.rs: the msi package names a .msi, its contents is a known package, and no component lists a package that carries another's contents.
  • hygiene.rs: .wxs joins the comment-language, invisible-character and punctuation scans.
  • DataFolderTests (C#): the folder choice and the installed-layout check.

Every guard above was checked by reversal: 23 mutations (template, script, register, workflows, signing script, window), each turning its test red.

Verified

  • An unsigned installer built from a fresh dist\ChronoMock (31 s, 60.7 MB), database check green.
  • Phase D's asset step, extracted from the YAML and run on five synthetic releases (0.3.0, 0.4.0 with and without the installer, a candidate with and without it): all five as expected. Phase C's installer step in bash: four of four.
  • hygiene, names, shape, msi, components, network, clippy on the CLI tests, dotnet format, the PowerShell lint, and the touched C# test classes.

Not covered here

  • Installing, upgrading and uninstalling on a real machine are measured by the maintainer before the release. A measurement script and a CI job that installs the installer on a runner follow in a separate change.
  • The public site and the repository README still describe the zips only. Their wording changes with the release.

Review round (b98ff66)

Four inline comments and four pre-merge warnings, each checked against the code before anything changed.

Fixed

  • The package copy could stage nothing and still build (build-msi.ps1). Confirmed by measurement before the fix: Copy-Item -Path <folder>\* from a folder named pkg [1] copied 0 of 4 files with no error, and from a plain folder it left the hidden top-level file out (3 of 4). The database check counted the staged files, so that installer would have passed. The copy now enumerates literally with hidden files, every file of the package is checked in the staging folder right after the copy, and the check runs before WiX is looked for. New guard the_installer_stages_the_whole_package_wherever_it_lies (a bracketed folder with a hidden file has to reach the WiX step).
  • Phase C demanded an installer from releases before 0.4.0 (attest-signed.yml). True, and phase B would have refused such a tag at its first step, since the tag's tree has no template. Phase B, C and D now share one rule: an installer from 0.4.0 on, never on a candidate (Test-Installer in sign-release.ps1, sort -V in phase C, the existing check in phase D). Checked on eight tags in phase C (0.3.1, 0.4.0, 0.10.0, 1.0.0, a candidate, with and without the file) and five releases in phase D. New guard every_phase_starts_the_installer_at_the_same_release.
  • The installer's README asked for a folder exclusion (msi-readme.md). The repository README asks for a file exclusion of the injected library first and a folder only as a fallback, so the installed README now says the same.
  • COM objects on the error paths (pre-merge, No Resource Leaks). Read-MsiRows now creates the installer object and opens the database inside the try that releases them, and releases each record in its own finally.
  • The phase C and D errors about the installer did not say what to do (pre-merge, Clear User-Facing Text). Each now names the action.

Not changed

  • is_comment misses the inside of multi-line XML comments (hygiene.rs). Correct, and older than this PR: measured across the repository's XAML, 1,706 comment lines are outside every hygiene scan. Fixing it means fixing what it then finds in existing files, so it is left for a separate change by the maintainer's decision, and recorded there.
  • A machine-wide PATH entry without a choice (pre-merge, System Changes Are Reversible). Deliberate: the command line on PATH for every account and for a build agent running as a service is the point of a per-machine install. Windows Installer adds the entry transactionally (a failed install rolls it back) and removes it at uninstall (Permanent="no"). Stop, crash and next-start recovery apply to a session, not to an installed program.
  • The repository README still says there is no installer (pre-merge, Scope). The README and the site describe the release a reader can download, and their wording changes with the release that first carries the installer.

All 26 reversal probes red after the round, the guards, clippy on the tests, the PowerShell lint, and a full unsigned build from dist (39 s) green.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Windows x64 releases now include a signed MSI installer; release candidates continue to provide the existing ZIP packages only.
    • The installer adds the app and command-line tools machine-wide, places the 64-bit command-line tool on PATH, and requires administrator rights.
    • Installed apps store history and diagnostic logs in the per-user folder. Portable copies use the folder beside the app when writable, otherwise the per-user folder.
    • The installer supports upgrades and blocks downgrades. Uninstalling removes the app but leaves per-user data intact.

Each release now also carries ChronoMock-app-win-x64.msi: the window and the
command line for every account on the machine, the window in the Start menu and
the 64-bit chrono on the machine's PATH. The two zips stay as they are, and a
release candidate gets no installer.

- packaging/build-msi.ps1 builds it with WiX 5.0.2 from the signed window
package, adds the calendars and presets beside each core, a marker and the
installer's own README, and then reads the built database back: version,
upgrade code, Restart Manager off, no custom action, no binary of WiX's own,
every staged file present. Every refusal of its inputs comes before WiX is
looked for and is one line on stderr with exit 1.
- packaging/msi/chronomock.wxs: perMachine, MajorUpgrade with
AllowSameVersionUpgrades and afterInstallInitialize (our programs carry the
product version, and a file of the same version on disk is not replaced, so
a rebuild under the same number must remove the old product first),
MSIRESTARTMANAGERCONTROL=Disable (the program holding our library is often
the application under test), no extension and no dialog.
- The window keeps its history and diagnostics logs in %LOCALAPPDATA% when the
installer put it where it is, also when it runs as administrator, and never
probes the install folder. WritableFolder.Choose replaces the two copies of
the choice the history store and the log carried.
- Phase B asks whether the installer can be built, and whether its inputs are
the tag's own, before the card signs anything, then builds it from the
signed package, signs it with the product name, reads the certificate back
and gives it an SBOM, a checksum and an attestation. Phase C attests it,
phase D expects it from 0.4.0 and checks its signature, and reads a
candidate's version without failing on the hyphen.
- Guards: crates/cli/tests/msi.rs (the installer's shape, nothing of WiX's in
it, the names several files share, one rule for a candidate, the order of
phase B, the calls that keep the window's files out of the install folder),
the register's msi package, and .wxs in the hygiene scans.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds a Windows x64 MSI installer for non-candidate releases. The change defines its packaging and installed data-folder behavior, then adds installer signing, SBOM generation, attestation, release verification, and related tests and documentation.

Changes

Windows MSI release support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Installed-layout data folders
gui/ChronoMock.App/Session/*, gui/ChronoMock.App.Tests/*
The application identifies an installed layout from its marker file. Installed copies use per-user folders for history and logs; portable copies use the executable folder when writable. Tests cover these choices and marker detection.
MSI package and build validation
packaging/build-msi.ps1, packaging/components.json, packaging/msi/*, packaging/sbom.ps1, packaging/msi-readme.md, crates/cli/tests/components.rs, crates/cli/tests/hygiene.rs, crates/cli/tests/msi.rs, crates/cli/tests/network.rs, CHANGELOG.md
The WiX package installs the application machine-wide, adds a PATH entry and Start Menu shortcut, and defines upgrade behavior. The build script validates and stages the payload before checking and publishing the MSI. The package register and SBOM script support installer contents. Tests and documentation cover the build and package behavior.
Release signing and verification
packaging/sign-release.ps1, .github/workflows/attest-signed.yml, .github/workflows/verify-release.yml, crates/cli/tests/msi.rs
For non-candidate tags, the release script builds and signs the MSI, generates its SBOM, and includes it in release assets and signed-subject checks. The workflows attest the installer and verify its expected assets and Authenticode signature.

The installer has bounded documentation and packaging gaps, and attestation recovery for older releases can fail. Fixing these before release is advisable; the evidence does not establish a broad release failure.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

The PR adds a machine-wide system-state change. In packaging/msi/chronomock.wxs:89-92, WiX adds the install folder to the system PATH and writes an HKLM component key. The sole Everything feature includes this component (:113-116), and the package states that it has no installer dialogs (:10-11), so users cannot choose the PATH change separately. Permanent="no" and the README describe removing the PATH entry at uninstall, but the PR does not save and restore the original state on stop, app close, crash, or next start. This fails the custom check.

Resolution

Remove the automatic machine-wide PATH change, or make it an explicit user-selected option. For any retained system-state change, save the original state before applying it and implement reliable, idempotent restoration on stop, app close, crash recovery and next start, as well as rollback and uninstall. Provide a visible control to stop and restore the change. Keep the change limited to the user's selection.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The PR adds operator-visible release errors that state the mismatch but do not say how to fix it. In .github/workflows/attest-signed.yml:86-88, the error reports whether the installer was expected and found, but gives no corrective action. In .github/workflows/verify-release.yml:89-90, the error says an ineligible tag carries the installer but does not tell the release operator to remove it.

Resolution

Make each error actionable. For the attestation error, use wording such as: Installer asset mismatch for $TAG: expected present=$want, found present=$have. Add the installer and its SBOM and Sigstore bundle to an eligible release, or remove them from a candidate release, then rerun attestation. For the verification error, say: Remove ChronoMock-app-win-x64.msi and its related SBOM and Sigstore assets from $TAG; candidates and releases before 0.4.0 must not include the installer.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

packaging/build-msi.ps1 adds COM database inspection that does not release every COM object on error paths. Read-MsiRows creates WindowsInstaller.Installer and calls OpenDatabase before entering its try/finally (lines 244–247), so an OpenDatabase exception skips release of $installer. Inside the fetch loop, $record is released only after all StringData calls succeed (lines 256–260); an exception while reading a row skips its release. Assert-Database invokes this function for several tables (lines 277, 297, 301), and the caller then needs to move and remove the staged MSI (lines 359–369). These new error paths can retain COM references and hold the database file open.

Resolution

Put creation of $installer, OpenDatabase, and OpenView inside protected try/finally blocks. Release each COM object that was successfully created in its corresponding finally, including $record in a per-record try/finally around the StringData reads. Preserve cleanup when any open, query, or row-read operation throws.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

The root README still says “There is no installer” and lists only the two ZIP files (README.md:57–69). This PR adds a release MSI that requires administrator rights to install. The changelog and MSI-specific README describe it, but the main download instructions remain inaccurate.

77-79: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

The source-path instability concern is refuted. WiX 5.0.2 strips the harvest source root when deriving each file’s relative directory, then creates the file and component identities from the install directory and filename. The random staging prefix does not change the generated component GUID.

The scans read .wxs files, but is_comment misses most of their comments.

is_comment matches only lines that start with <!--. The template's comment bodies sit on continuation lines inside multi-line <!-- ... --> blocks (for example, lines 25-37 of chronomock.wxs). Those lines are not checked for language, dashes or semicolons. The guard reports coverage that it does not provide. Track the state of multi-line XML comments for wxs/xaml files, or treat every line between <!-- and --> as a comment.

Update is_comment to recognize every line inside multi-line XML comment blocks
in wxs and xaml files, tracking comment state from <!-- through -->; preserve
existing comment detection for other formats.

… release for the installer

- build-msi.ps1 copied the package with `Copy-Item -Path <folder>\*`, which
reads the folder as a pattern: a package in a folder whose name holds
brackets copied nothing and said nothing, and a hidden file at the top was
left out. The database check counted the staged files, so an incomplete
staging would have built and passed. The copy now enumerates literally with
hidden files, every file of the package is checked in the staging folder
right after it, and that check runs before WiX is looked for so a guard can
  ask it without WiX.
- Phase B, C and D now agree on the releases that carry an installer: from
0.4.0 on, never a candidate. Phase C demanded one from a fix on an older
line, which phase B would never build.
- Read-MsiRows releases every COM object on the error paths too.
- The installer's README asks for a file exclusion of the injected library
first, as the repository README does, and a folder exclusion only as a
  fallback.
- The phase C and D errors about the installer say what to do.
- Guards: the whole package staged from a bracketed folder with a hidden
file, and one first release in all three phases.
