Summary

An internal user ran odh-openshell-sandbox-openclaw on OpenShift and wrote a runbook with a derivative image and a custom startup wrapper to get it working. They were on gateway 0.0.111, so some of the failures came from that old release. This PR takes the parts that are real on current midstream main and fixes them in the image itself, and leaves out the rest. I reproduced each failure on the current image before fixing it.

Related Issue

Related to RHAISTRAT-1845.

Changes

  • openclaw-start creates ~/.openclaw and ~/.openclaw-worker as 0700 and clears the setgid bit on every directory under them, on every start. This also repairs sandboxes that already have bad directories.
  • The image env and profile.sh set TMPDIR=/tmp.
  • openclaw-start accepts optional MODEL_MAX_TOKENS, MODEL_CONTEXT_WINDOW and MODEL_REASONING. They are validated before onboarding and applied to the onboarded model entry once, at first run, like the other MODEL_* variables.
  • smoke-test.sh adds setgid-home, model-overrides and tmpdir checks, and login-shell now checks TMPDIR. All four fail on the current image.
  • README: documents the new variables and the setgid repair, moves the verified commit to 4f6b3ad, and updates the verified checklist.

Adapted from the runbook, and why

Runbook step Problem What this PR does instead
chmod g-s on the agent directory and its parents, then chmod 0700 The Kubernetes driver sets the pod fsGroup, so kubelet makes the /sandbox volume setgid and new directories inherit the bit. OpenClaw requires an existing private secret directory to be exactly 0700, so agents/main/agent fails with insecure permissions 2700. The wrapper clears setgid across both OpenClaw state trees, not three hardcoded paths, because OpenClaw creates many private directories with a plain recursive mkdir and uses ~/.openclaw-worker too. It leaves /sandbox itself alone, since that volume and its group inheritance belong to OpenShell.
ENV TMPDIR=/tmp SQLITE_TMPDIR=/tmp SQLite tries /var/tmp before /tmp and only checks it with access(). Landlock does not block access(), so SQLite picks /var/tmp, which the sandbox policy does not grant, and opening the database fails (fts5: error creating shadow table ...: unable to open database file). TMPDIR=/tmp only. SQLite reads SQLITE_TMPDIR first and TMPDIR second, so one variable covers SQLite and Node. It is also set in profile.sh for login shells.
openclaw config set replacing the whole model list with reasoning: true and maxTokens: 32768 Custom-provider onboarding hardcodes maxTokens: 4096 and reasoning: false, with no flag to change either. A reasoning model spends the allowance thinking and OpenClaw reports Agent couldn't generate a response (stopReason=length payloads=0). Opt-in env vars that set only the given fields on the onboarded entry, so the model ID and name stay whatever MODEL_ID says. Nothing is hardcoded for one model. The default stays at OpenClaw's 4096 because the right limit depends on the server.

Not adopted from the runbook, and why

Runbook step Why it is not needed
Install iproute and util-linux-core for /usr/sbin/ip and /usr/bin/nsenter The supervisor needed those in the workload image before the RFC 0012 sandbox rework (NVIDIA#2942). Current crates never look for them, and the sandbox reached Ready without them.
Hand-building the SQLite schema from the minified openclaw-agent-schema-*.mjs This is a symptom of the TMPDIR bug: the failed temp-file open leaves a half-built database. With TMPDIR=/tmp, OpenClaw builds its own schema. The workaround is also fragile, because it hardcodes schema version 24 and parses minified code.
Never redirect to /dev/null The current default policy grants /dev/null read-write.
openshell policy update --add-endpoint after every sandbox create Attaching the provider is enough on current main. The proxy allowed the model request under the provider's own policy (policy:_provider_<name>), with no extra rule.
Rebuilding OpenClaw from the npm registry at 2026.9.9 The image installs a hermetic npm closure shared with the AIPCC OpenClaw image. Version bumps follow that lineage (README, Updating OpenClaw), not ad hoc npm install.
A separate openclaw-openshell-start wrapper The fixes live in openclaw-start, so the documented -- openclaw-start command works as it is.

Testing

  • build-local.sh openclaw (hermetic, linux/amd64, rootless podman 5.8.7): the build succeeds and all 16 smoke-test.sh checks pass. The four new or extended checks fail on an image built from current main.
  • shellcheck on openclaw-start.sh, profile.sh and smoke-test.sh, and markdownlint-cli2 on the README, pass.
  • End to end on kind (Kubernetes 1.37, rootless podman). The midstream gateway, supervisor and Kubernetes driver were built from 4f6b3ad. The workspace StorageClass honors fsGroup, so /sandbox is 2777 with setgid, and the sandbox runs as UID 10001 with no passwd entry. Steps: lint and import the example profile, create the provider, create the sandbox, run a headless agent exec turn, then drive an interactive TUI turn.
    • Image from current main: the TUI fails with "/sandbox/.openclaw/agents/main/agent" has insecure permissions 2700, the headless turn fails with the FTS5 unable to open database file error, and setgid directories are left under ~/.openclaw.
    • This branch, against a stub reasoning model and a local llama.cpp model (Qwen3.8-27B): both turns complete, the agent directory is 0700, no setgid directories remain, and the TUI shows the reasoning level and the 131k context window from the overrides.
    • The maxTokens failure was reproduced with the stub (max_tokens: 4096, stopReason=length), and fixed with MODEL_MAX_TOKENS=16384.
  • OpenShift with an SCC-assigned UID and CSI-backed workspace volumes: not run.

Retry model overrides after an incomplete first run.

If openclaw config set fails after onboarding writes the config, the script exits. The next start sees the config and skips both onboarding and the override loop. The requested values can remain at defaults or reflect only partially applied overrides.

Persist completion state for the onboarding-and-override sequence. Retry the requested overrides when that state is incomplete. Preserve the existing first-run-only behavior after all overrides succeed.

Thanks Andre, this is a solid cleanup. Testing each runbook step against current main and writing down why the rest didn't make it ("Not adopted from the runbook, and why") made this a quick review. The TMPDIR root cause and the opt-in model overrides look good to me.

One thing I'd like fixed before I approve: the setgid repair can keep openclaw-start from starting at all. Details and a small fix are inline on openclaw-start.sh:31.

A few smaller things:

  • openclaw-start.sh:116: +1 to CodeRabbit's outside-diff note, which is still open. If config set fails after onboarding (the EDR exit 137 the README already warns about, for example), the next start finds the config and quietly runs with maxTokens 4096 and reasoning off. That's the failure this PR fixes. Deleting the config and its .bak before exit 1 would make the retry onboard again.
  • README.md:102 still says every smoke-test.sh check passes on the GitHub runners (podman 4.9.3, amd64 and arm64). The new checks only ran on amd64 with podman 5.8.7, so I'd either scope that sentence or re-run there.
  • The setgid-home check can pass on a mode OpenClaw would reject (inline on smoke-test.sh:299).
  • Not for this PR: the TMPDIR problem isn't specific to OpenClaw. The default policy grants /tmp but not /var/tmp (crates/openshell-policy/src/lib.rs:986), so any workload using SQLite will hit it. Probably worth an issue to fix it in the default policy or the supervisor's default env.

Two things I checked that turned out fine: the pod uses fsGroupChangePolicy: OnRootMismatch, so kubelet won't put setgid or group bits back on restart, and OpenClaw resolves .openclaw-worker from HOME, so the hardcoded path is right.

Leaving this as a comment for now. Happy to approve once the find change is in.

for dir in "${state_dir}" "${HOME}/.openclaw-worker"; do
# shellcheck disable=SC2174 # only the state directory itself must be private
mkdir -p -m 0700 "${dir}"
find "${dir}" -xdev -type d -perm -2000 -user "$(id -u)" -exec chmod g-s {} +

This find runs under set -e on every openclaw-start call, and OpenClaw's default agent workspace is ~/.openclaw/workspace, so it also walks everything the agent writes there. Two ways that goes wrong:

  • a directory it can't read (the agent leaves one at mode 000, say), or
  • a directory removed mid-walk, e.g. sandbox exec -- openclaw-start agent exec starting while a TUI turn is running.

Either one makes find exit 1, so the script stops before the chmod 0700 and the exec, and it fails the same way on every start until someone fixes the directory by hand. I reproduced both with this exact expression: a mode-000 dir gives rc=1 and leaves the root at 755, and with directories churning during the walk it failed 24 times out of 30.

I'd make the repair best effort and add -ignore_readdir_race:

if ! find "${dir}" -xdev -ignore_readdir_race -type d -perm -2000 -user "$(id -u)" -exec chmod g-s {} +; then
echo "openclaw-start: warning: could not clear setgid everywhere under ${dir}" >&2
fi

I wouldn't prune the workspace to speed this up, because OpenClaw keeps some private dirs in there (.openclaw-cli-images, for one). If startup time on big workspaces ever matters, a marker under /tmp so the repair runs once per container would be cheap. With OnRootMismatch, kubelet won't set the bit again anyway.

Good catch, fixed in f76ea5f with your version: find now runs with -ignore_readdir_race, and a failure only prints a warning, so the root chmod 0700 and the exec always happen. I left the workspace unpruned for the reason you gave. Verified:

  • setgid-home now puts a mode-000 directory in ~/.openclaw/workspace before the restart. On the previous build it fails with RESTART_FAILED find: '/sandbox/.openclaw/workspace/locked': Permission denied, and it passes now.
  • Your churn case: 30 starts with directories being created and removed under the workspace, 0 failures (previous build: same failure you saw).

-e MODEL_ID=smoke-model -e CUSTOM_API_KEY=smoke-placeholder "${image}" bash -c '
set -euo pipefail
if [[ "$(stat -c %a /sandbox)" != 2777 ]]; then echo "HOME_NOT_SETGID"; exit 1; fi

Small one: mkdir -p creates this stale agent dir as 2755, so after the repair it's 0755. The check only looks for leftover setgid, so it passes on a mode OpenClaw's exact-0700 check would reject. Creating it the way OpenClaw leaves it (2700) and asserting 700 afterwards would test what the README promises:

mkdir -p /sandbox/.openclaw/agents/main/agent
chmod 2700 /sandbox/.openclaw/agents/main/agent
# ...after openclaw-start:
agent_mode=$(stat -c %a /sandbox/.openclaw/agents/main/agent)
if [[ "$agent_mode" != 700 ]]; then echo "AGENT_MODE=$agent_mode"; exit 1; fi

Done in f76ea5f: the stale agent dir is created at 2700, and the check asserts ~/.openclaw, ~/.openclaw-worker and agents/main/agent are all 700 afterwards.

…oxes

Clear inherited setgid on OpenClaw state dirs, set TMPDIR=/tmp so SQLite
avoids /var/tmp under Landlock, and add opt-in MODEL_MAX_TOKENS,
MODEL_CONTEXT_WINDOW and MODEL_REASONING onboarding overrides.

@EmilienM thanks for the thorough review. All addressed in f76ea5f (amended):

  • find blocking startup: best effort with -ignore_readdir_race, details inline.
  • config set failure after onboarding (your +1 on CodeRabbit's outside-diff note): openclaw-start now removes the config and its .bak before exit 1. Checked with a shim that fails only config set (exit 137): the first start exits 1 and leaves no config, and the next start onboards again and ends with maxTokens 32768.
  • README:102: scoped. The GitHub-runner sentence now covers only the checks that existed then, and says the new checks and the TMPDIR assertion have only run on linux/amd64 with podman 5.8.7.
  • setgid-home accepting 0755: fixed, details inline.

Hermetic build-local.sh openclaw passes all 16 smoke checks, and the kind e2e (setgid /sandbox from fsGroup, headless turn against the stub model) passes.

Agreed on /var/tmp: it affects any SQLite workload, not just OpenClaw, so I'll raise it separately, together with the fsGroup setgid inheritance, which hits any harness that checks permissions strictly.
