Node's fs.openAsBlob reports a file-backed Blob's size mod 2^32 (nodejs/node#66207), so the zip reader's tail read of any TDF >= 4 GiB landed mid-payload and decrypt/inspect failed with 'Unable to retrieve CD manifest'. Open input files with a FileHandle-backed Chunker that reads by explicit 64-bit-safe position instead, and use it for both encrypt and decrypt. Small JSON option files now use readFile. Open the input with O_NONBLOCK so a FIFO with no writer does not hang open() before the isFile() check can reject it. Also keep a failed close() from replacing the reason the file was rejected. Signed-off-by: Dave Mihalcik <dmihalcik@virtru.com>
The logger does not print a CLIError's cause, so the 'not a regular file' and 'too large' reasons were hidden behind a generic message. Include the cause in the message, and fix the 'accessable' typo. Signed-off-by: Dave Mihalcik <dmihalcik@virtru.com>
closeSource now logs a close failure instead of throwing, so it cannot replace the real error from a finally block, and it runs before the client's close() so a throwing close() cannot skip it. The read and create option parsers also close the input file if a later option (assertions, verification keys, rewrap key type) fails to parse. Signed-off-by: Dave Mihalcik <dmihalcik@virtru.com>

Upstream Node bug: nodejs/node#66207
Why
The js CLI could not
decryptorinspectany TDF of 4 GiB or more (InvalidFileError: Unable to retrieve CD manifest). go and java read the same well-formed ZIP64 files without problems. The cause is in Node, not the zip reader.
fs.openAsBlob()reports a file-backed Blob'ssizemodulo 2^32. For example, a 64 GiB TDF of 68,723,312,361 bytes reports 3,835,625 (seen on Node v24.21.0).ZipReaderfinds the central directory withblob.slice(-1000), which is relative to that wrong size, so it reads from the middle of the payload. Streaming is not affected, so encrypt worked and only random access was broken.Browsers report the correct size, so the SDK's
file-browserpath and the web-app are unaffected.Approach
The CLI now reads input through a positional
FileHandle.readchunker, passed as a{ type: 'chunker' }source for both encrypt and decrypt. This works on every Node version and leaveslib/(isomorphic, with nonode:imports) untouched.Alternatives rejected:
CHECKinblob.slice(). It would also force every user onto a new Node.slice()CHECK.streamsource. It works for encrypt, but decrypt buffers stream sources fully into memory.User-visible changes
file changed while readinginstead of silently producing a truncated or mixed TDF.File is not accessible [file]: <cause>(missing file, not a regular file, too large). This replacesFile is not accessable [file], which hid the cause.--assertionsand--assertionVerificationKeysfiles may start with a UTF-8 BOM, as they could underopenAsBlob.--log-level debug, the logged source is now{"type":"chunker"}.Testing
cd cli && npm test: 15 passing. The key test uses a sparse 2^32 + 4096 byte file (a few KiB on disk) to check the real size, negative-offset tail reads, and a range above 2^32. A canary test asserts thatopenAsBlobstill truncates; it will fail once Node fixes the bug, signalling the workaround can be revisited.bats cli/bin/opentdf.bats: 11/11.openAsBlobpath fails withUnable to retrieve CD manifest, while the new CLIinspectprints the full manifest (32768 segments). Not verified
--bench-scaleor 5 GiB run with this CLI build would close the gap.Out of scope
