Behaviour change: none

Problem

  • bindgenv2 writes C++ for each .bindv2.ts type, but no Rust. src/jsc/generated.rs copied the extern layouts and the conversions by hand, about 500 lines.
  • Nothing checked that the two sides agree, and a missed hand edit corrupts memory. Four commits on main changed both sides together: e54bbfa, 85f22bb, cc40d78, bd8edc7.

Fix

  • bindgenv2 writes bindgen_generated.rs: the #[repr(C)] extern types, the public types, and from_js. Three public names now match their .bindv2.ts names: SocketConfigBinaryType, SocketConfigTLS, ALPNProtocols.
  • The generator writes the size, alignment and field offsets of each extern struct as assertions for both compilers. A mismatch fails the build.
  • Verified: test/internal/build-codegen-declared-outputs.test.ts. Covered by test/js/bun/net/socket.test.ts, test/js/node/net/node-net.test.ts, test/js/node/tls/node-tls-connect.test.ts.
  • Reviewed: my own review found no defect. Three later reviews found 9 gaps in the generator. Each is fixed or refused (Notes).

Background

  • A .bindv2.ts file declares a dictionary, a union or an enum. C++ converts the JS value and fills an extern struct. Rust builds the public type from it.
  • The dead Zig description of each type (zigType, bindgenType) becomes the Rust one.
  • This is the first PR of the WebGPU rework (design). It does not depend on the rest.

Downsides

  • The generator writes Rust only for shapes that a current input uses. It stops with a named error on each other shape (list in Notes).
  • GeneratedBindgenLayout.cpp compiles in 1.6 s and adds 45 bytes of code. The debug binary grows by 10,280 bytes.
Notes

What the generated code keeps the same

  • The extern struct of each type has the same fields in the same order as the hand-written one.
  • Ownership does not change. A string arrives with one reference and bun_core::String adopts it. An ArrayBuffer or Blob pointer in a union arm carries one reference, and the Drop of the enum releases it. An array from C++ is copied, and then its buffer is freed.
  • from_extern takes an extern struct of more than 8 bytes by reference. The hand-written convert_from_extern did the same for dictionaries and for SocketConfigTLS. It took the three small unions by value (see Known limits).
  • An unknown union tag is now unreachable!(). It was unreachable_unchecked(). C++ writes the tag from std::variant::index(), so no input reaches it.

Layout checks, both directions

  • Rust: with length: usize in ExternArrayList, the build fails with error[E0080]: evaluation panicked: assertion failed: core::mem::size_of::<ExternSSLConfigFile>() == 24.
  • C++: with a wrong number in GeneratedBindgenLayout.cpp, the compile fails with static assertion failed due to requirement 'sizeof(Bun::Bindgen::Generated::ExternSocketConfigHandlers) == 120' (112 == 120).
  • The numbers assume 8-byte pointers. Each target asserts them when it compiles.

Tests on this machine (debug build with ASAN, Linux x64, no public DNS)

These runs are from 1bab98a, except symbols.test.ts, which is from two commits before it. The generated Rust and C++ have not changed since 2574658, and CI ran the full suite on 4a3b5bb.

The debug binary is 809,120,920 bytes. On main at abc26b7 it is 809,110,640 bytes.

Test Branch main at abc26b7
build-codegen-declared-outputs.test.ts 4 pass not run
node-tls-connect.test.ts 71 pass, 18 skip not run
bun-serve-ssl.test.ts 18 pass not run
tls-bunfile-leak.test.ts 1 pass not run
socket.test.ts 94 pass, 1 fail the same test fails with the released build
node-net.test.ts 109 pass, 10 fail 109 pass, the same 10 fail
symbols.test.ts 1 pass, 1 fail 1 pass, the same 1 fails
  • The socket.test.ts failure is getaddrinfo EAI_AGAIN www.example.com.
  • The 10 node-net.test.ts failures are the same 10 tests on both builds. 8 of them are connect ECONNREFUSED 127.0.0.1.
  • net.Socket write > should allow reconnecting after end() fails in some runs of the whole file on both builds.
  • symbols.test.ts checks glibc symbol versions, and it fails on a debug build.

Size of the change

  • The whole diff is +574 and -689 lines in 18 files. src/jsc/generated.rs goes from 1,091 lines to 599. The generator grows by +526 and -170 lines in 11 files. The plan was about 300 lines.
  • docs/project/bindgen.mdx describes the older .bind.ts generator, so it does not change.

Self-review

The review judged the change wanted as a refactor that stands alone, and found the generated extern types equal to the deleted ones in fields, order and types. These are the points it raised that I read. Its itemized list of implementation concerns did not come back, so that count is not known.

Point Answer
cargo clippy was red: an 8-byte extern struct went by reference Fixed in eb9957f. A struct of 8 bytes or less goes by value.
The FakeTimersConfig binding has no caller The input has no caller on main in C++ or Rust. #40969 deletes the input, and the binding goes with it.
The body named one of five PRs that overlap See the next table.
The diff is larger than the plan of about 300 generator lines The layout checks and GeneratedBindgenLayout.cpp were not in the plan. They are the part that makes a mismatch a build error.
No maintainer approved this PR or the stack in writing Not something a commit can answer. The request and the approval of the direction were in chat.

Hand review, four areas: the layout numbers, the ownership of ArrayBuffer and Blob arms, the build wiring of the two new outputs, the three renames. No defect found. A probe confirmed that the generator stops on each position where a counted pointer would have no owner.

Correction. That hand review missed 9 gaps in the generator. Three reviews after it found them (d8719cb, 6b5efe6, 590431b). No current .bindv2.ts file has any of these shapes, and in each of those commits the generated Rust and C++ are byte-identical to 2574658.

Gap Effect if an input had the shape Now
A union arm whose dictionary holds a RawAny The JS value goes in a Box, where the garbage collector does not look Refused
Two enum values with one variant name, or a value with no valid name Rust does not compile Suffix from the C++ name, or refused
A dictionary member named as a Rust keyword Rust does not compile Trailing underscore (type_)
Two dictionary members with one Rust name Rust does not compile Refused
A union where each arm releases a reference unreachable_patterns No wildcard arm
An array whose element converts with one call clippy::redundant_closure Function path
A union with no payload unused_unsafe No unsafe block
A dictionary with no members Layout is 0 bytes in Rust and 1 byte in C++ Refused
A nullable RawAny Layout is 16 bytes in Rust and 8 bytes in C++ Refused

Shapes the generator refuses

  • StrongAny
  • A union with no name
  • ArrayBuffer or Blob outside a union
  • A nullable RawAny or StrongAny
  • A dictionary with no members
  • A union arm whose dictionary holds a RawAny
  • Two members of one dictionary, or two keys of one union, that get one Rust name
  • An enum value or a union key that gives no valid variant name

Not reviewed: a dictionary with a RawAny that is held by value (SocketConfig, SocketConfigHandlers). It is generated as the hand-written code had it.

Not verified: that an edit of a .bindv2.ts file rebuilds bun_jsc (read from the build edges, not run). The C++ mismatch check was run on Linux x64 only.

Open PRs that touch the same files (no trial merge was made)

PR What it touches After this PR
#40915 Deletes the same dead Zig members, toZigNamespace and src/jsc/bindgen.rs The second to land resolves the shared deletions
#40969 Deletes FakeTimersConfig.bindv2.ts Its generated Rust and C++ go away
#40236 Adds two GenVal accessors beside the helpers that this PR keeps Does not touch the deleted code
#40275 Edits SSLConfig.bindv2.ts and the hand mirror Needs only the .bindv2.ts edit
#43705 Edits SocketConfig.bindv2.ts and the hand mirror Needs only the .bindv2.ts edit

src/jsc/bindgen.rs is an unused second description of the same ABI. This PR does not use it.

The Zig description of each type has had no reader since #32621 removed the Zig emitter.

Known limits

  • An enum value or a union key that starts with a digit is refused. WebGPU has such values (1d, 2d, 3d). The Rust name is public API of bun_jsc::generated, so it needs a maintainer's choice in the PR that adds the first such enum.
  • When the generator refuses an enum value or an unsupported kind, the C++ files that it wrote before that point stay on disk. The step exits with code 1, so the build stops. A dictionary that is refused at declaration writes nothing.
  • The three small unions go by reference: ExternSSLConfigSingleFile (16 bytes), ExternALPNProtocols (16) and ExternSSLConfigFile (24). The hand-written code took them by value. Both forms pass clippy. size > 64 in borrowed() restores the old form. It is a one-line change that alters the generated Rust, so I left the choice to a maintainer (comment).
  • The second pass of the automated review said that it withheld one verified finding. I could not see it. The third pass had nothing new to post. I do not know if that finding is covered.

Rust lints trigger. 4a3b5bb adds src/**/*.bindv2.ts to the pull_request paths of .github/workflows/rust-lints.yml, because a .bindv2.ts file is now an input of the Rust build. I did not test that the trigger fires. That needs a pull request that changes only a .bindv2.ts file.

CI on 4a3b5bb: Buildkite #120588 passed, 181 of 181 jobs. Format, Lint JavaScript, Source lints, cargo clippy, cargo miri test, comment-cop, lol-html cargo test and mordant pass. Claude Code Review was skipped.

Each type had a Zig description (bindgenType, zigType, optionalZigType)
that nothing reads since the Zig emitter went away in d451445. A Rust
description replaces it: the extern type that C++ writes with its size
and alignment, the public type, and the conversion between the two.
The generator now writes the Rust for every named type, and the size,
alignment and field offsets of every extern struct as assertions for
both compilers.
generated.rs keeps the helpers that the generated code calls. The three
public names that did not match their .bindv2.ts names now do:
SocketConfigBinaryType, SocketConfigTLS and ALPNProtocols.

Status

  • How it was verified: Buildkite #120588 passed on 4a3b5bb, 181 of 181 jobs, so both compilers accept the generated layout assertions on each target. cargo clippy, cargo miri test, mordant, Format and the lints pass on the same head. On Linux x64 (debug, ASAN): bun bd test test/internal/build-codegen-declared-outputs.test.ts passes (4 tests), and node-tls-connect.test.ts (71 pass), bun-serve-ssl.test.ts (18 pass) and tls-bunfile-leak.test.ts pass. socket.test.ts and node-net.test.ts fail only in tests that fail the same way on main on this machine, which has no public DNS.
  • A wrong layout fails the build on each side. Rust: error[E0080]: evaluation panicked: assertion failed: core::mem::size_of::<ExternSSLConfigFile>() == 24. C++: static assertion failed due to requirement 'sizeof(Bun::Bindgen::Generated::ExternSocketConfigHandlers) == 120'.
  • This PR changes no behaviour. The generated Rust and C++ for the three current .bindv2.ts files are byte-identical from 2574658 to 4a3b5bb.
  • Reviews after the PR was marked ready found 9 gaps in the generator. Each is fixed or refused, and the PR body lists them with the known limits. One choice is open for a maintainer: bindgenv2: emit the Rust side instead of hand-mirroring it #43945 (comment).
  • It is ready for review. No person has reviewed it yet.
  • PR: bindgenv2: emit the Rust side instead of hand-mirroring it #43945

clippy denies trivially_copy_pass_by_ref for a Copy type of 8 bytes or
less and large_types_passed_by_value above 64 bytes. The generator knows
the size of each extern struct, so it picks the form that both accept.

Walkthrough

Bindgen v2 now defines Rust type metadata and generates Rust source and layout checks for named types. The build pipeline registers and includes the generated Rust file. JSC socket configuration code uses generated types, and output tests cover the added files.

Changes

Bindgen v2 Rust generation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Rust type metadata and mappings
src/codegen/bindgenv2/internal/base.ts, src/codegen/bindgenv2/internal/{any,primitives}.ts
The type model adds Rust representations, layouts, and naming helpers. Primitive and any types now expose Rust mappings.
Compound type Rust generation
src/codegen/bindgenv2/internal/{array,interfaces,optional,string,dictionary,enumeration,union}.ts
Compound types expose Rust mappings and conversion metadata. Dictionary, enum, and named union types also generate Rust source and layout metadata.
Generated source and build integration
src/codegen/bindgenv2/script.ts, scripts/build/codegen.ts, src/jsc/{build.rs,generated.rs}
The codegen script writes Rust type source and Rust and C++ layout assertions. The build registers and checks the Rust output. JSC includes generated Rust and adds an array adoption helper.
Socket references and output checks
src/runtime/socket/{Handlers.rs,SSLConfig.rs}, test/internal/build-codegen-declared-outputs.test.ts, .github/workflows/rust-lints.yml
Socket code uses generated binary, TLS, and ALPN types. Tests include the Rust and layout files in declared output groups. The Rust lint workflow also runs when .bindv2.ts files change.

An enum takes its variant names from the C++ member names, so two values
that differ only in punctuation get the suffix that C++ gives them. A
value or a union key that gives no valid variant name is an error when
the generator runs. A dictionary member whose name is a Rust keyword
gets a trailing underscore, as unix_ has. The Drop of a union has no
wildcard arm when every arm releases a reference.

The generated code for the current inputs does not change.

Members fooBar and foo_bar both become the field foo_bar, and type and
type_ both become type_. An enum and a union already refused such a
pair. A dictionary now does too, with the same check. The names are
computed once, so the struct and its layout check use the same ones.

The generated code for the current inputs does not change.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked two things: a repo-wide grep for the three renamed types (SocketConfigHandlersBinaryType, SocketConfigTls, SSLConfigAlpnProtocols) finds no stale consumers outside the two updated src/runtime/socket files, and the new adopt_array in src/jsc/generated.rs keeps the copy-then-free_without_size ownership pattern of the deleted hand-written SSLConfigFile array arm, so array buffer release behavior is unchanged.

Extended reasoning...

The change replaces the hand-written Rust mirror of bindgenv2 output with generator-emitted Rust plus cross-compiler layout assertions; it touches FFI/ABI layout and ownership of C++-allocated buffers and refcounted union arms, but no auth, crypto, or injection surface. The bug hunt was cut off at its finding cap rather than running dry and several generator-input edge cases were flagged inline, so a human look is still warranted; this note only records the rename and array-ownership checks that were ruled out.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🟡 src/codegen/bindgenv2/internal/base.ts — nit: maintainers get two more copies of naming logic that already exists in this generator. pascalCase at base.ts:144 repeats the cppName computation in enumeration.ts:47-51 verbatim, and snakeCase at base.ts:232 repeats the three-step body of toZigNamespace in script.ts:102-106. Fix: have enumeration.ts build cppName as "k" + pascalCase(value) and have script.ts call snakeCase (or drop toZigNamespace, whose _namespace suffix guards a Zig namespace that no longer exists), so one body per rule remains.

    Why this was flagged

The diff adds pascalCase and snakeCase to src/codegen/bindgenv2/internal/base.ts:144-237. The same split/filter/capitalize/join pipeline already runs at src/codegen/bindgenv2/internal/enumeration.ts:47-51 to produce C++ member names, and the same two regex replaces plus toLowerCase already run at src/codegen/bindgenv2/script.ts:103-106 in toZigNamespace. The Rust enum variant and the C++ enum member for the same value are now computed by two separate copies, so a future edit to one (for example collision suffixing, which enumeration.ts:52-57 does and base.ts does not) silently drifts from the other. No runtime failure today; this is a maintenance nit only. The base branch had one copy of each rule.

Verification: nit. Triggering condition: any future edit to one of the two copies of the naming pipeline (e.g. changing how a value is split or capitalized) silently desynchronizes the Rust variant name from the C++ member name for the same enum value. Mechanism verified in the diff: pascalCase is added at /home/claude/bun/src/codegen/bindgenv2/internal/base.ts:144-150 (`.split(/[^A-Za-z0-9]+/).filter(piece…

The generator now stops on a dictionary with no members, on a nullable
RawAny, and on a union arm whose dictionary holds a RawAny. The first
two have a different layout in C++ and in Rust. The third would put a
JS value in a Box, where the garbage collector does not look. C++ marks
such a dictionary as stack-only.

An array whose element converts with one call names the function, and a
union with no payload has no unsafe block. Both were lint errors.

The SAFETY text of adopt_array names the allocator that C++ uses.

The generated code for the current inputs does not change.

Reply to the review above. Six findings have a thread each, and each thread has an answer. One finding is only in the review text, so I answer it here.

Two copies of the naming logic (pascalCase and the C++ name loop, snakeCase and toZigNamespace). True, and not changed in this PR.

State of the generator after this review. It writes Rust for the shapes that the three current .bindv2.ts files use. For each other shape that was found, it now stops with an error that names the shape. It does not try to support them. In each of these commits the generated code for the current inputs is byte-identical to the head where CI passed on every target (2574658).

The commits since my earlier pass (d8719cb through 590431b) address each point it raised: enum variants now go through rustVariants/uniqueRustNames, keyword members through rustField, nullable RawAny, RawAny-holding dictionary arms and empty dictionaries are refused in the generator, the array closure and payload-less union unsafe no longer trip clippy, and the adopt_array SAFETY text names MimallocMalloc. Beyond the two inline comments on this round, I have nothing further to add.

Extended reasoning...

The range replaces the hand-written Rust mirror in src/jsc/generated.rs with a bindgenv2 Rust backend across the codegen leaf types, adds generated size/align/offset assertions on both compilers, and wires the new outputs into scripts/build/codegen.ts and src/jsc/build.rs; it touches FFI/ABI layout for the socket and TLS config types but no auth, crypto or input-parsing surface. The latest commit resolves the earlier-round findings, but two new findings are posted inline and a further verified finding was withheld, so this is not an approval.

Comment thread scripts/build/codegen.ts
Comment thread src/codegen/bindgenv2/internal/base.ts
bindgenv2 now writes Rust that bun_jsc compiles, so a .bindv2.ts file is
an input of the Rust build. The workflow already lists the other input
of generated Rust, src/**/*.classes.ts. Buildkite compiles with rustc
and does not run clippy, so without this entry a pull request that
changes only a .bindv2.ts file gets no clippy and no mordant run.

SSLConfigSingleFile and ALPNProtocols have 16-byte extern layouts. SSLConfigFile has a 24-byte layout. These reachable unions pass their sizes to borrowed(), which currently generates &Extern... parameters for all of them. The documented contract requires values up to 64 bytes to remain by value.

Reply to the finding on borrowed() in src/codegen/bindgenv2/internal/base.ts:105, which has no thread.

Not changed now. It is a choice for a maintainer, and a one-line change if wanted.

What the two lints require (Cargo.toml:239-240, clippy.toml:101):

Size of the extern struct trivially_copy_pass_by_ref large_types_passed_by_value Allowed
8 bytes or less by value only no rule by value
9 to 64 bytes no rule no rule both
more than 64 bytes no rule by reference only by reference

So size > 8 and size > 64 both pass. cargo clippy passed in CI on 590431b with the current code. from_extern is a private Rust function, so this is not part of the ABI with C++.

The comment on line 105 names the two limits and does not say what the function does between them. That is a fair point, and I will make it exact with the next change to that file.

One fact in favour of the suggestion, which I found when I checked it: the hand-written code that this PR deletes passed the three small unions by value, and the generator passes them by reference.

Extern struct Size Hand-written on main Generated now With size > 64
ExternSSLConfigSingleFile 16 by value by reference by value
ExternALPNProtocols 16 by value by reference by value
ExternSSLConfigFile 24 by value by reference by value
ExternSocketConfigTLS 232 by reference by reference by reference
the dictionaries 112 or more by reference by reference by reference

So size > 64 gives the same convention as the deleted code. I did not intend the difference.

Why I do not change it in this push: the values are Copy and the function is private, so I expect no difference in behaviour. But the change alters the generated Rust for three types, and the generated code has been byte-identical since 2574658, the last head where I saw the full CI pass. I would rather have one complete CI run on the current head first.
