Problem

  • write() that is the first to observe the peer's reset returns -1 > tcp in test/js/bun/net/socket.test.ts fails now and then on darwin x64 with writes: [4, 4]. Seven builds since 2026-10-17 show it.
  • The child writes when the parent reports that it sent the RST. The child's kernel can apply the RST later, and then send() succeeds.
  • test/js/node/tls/node-tls-connect.test.ts has the same fixture and race.

Fix

  • After the report, the child waits until socket.remotePort is undefined. That getter is getpeername(): it fails once the kernel has reset the socket and does not consume the socket's error.
  • The assertions do not change. Windows keeps only the report: I could not verify that getpeername() fails there after a reset.
  • Verified on a Linux debug build, reset sent 100 ms after the report: the old fixtures fail with the CI output, the new fixtures pass. On macOS both files pass in CI build 128989.

Background

  • terminate() closes the fd with SO_LINGER {1, 0}, so the kernel sends an RST. Nothing tells the sender when the peer processes it.
  • macOS hands loopback packets to a kernel thread (dlil_input_async in xnu), so close() returns before the peer has the RST.
  • A socket that the kernel has reset rejects send(), and write() returns -1 (tls: consolidate the open TLS fixes (both engines, node:tls, node:https, WebSocket, SQL) #44618). getpeername() fails too: EINVAL on macOS, ENOTCONN on Linux.
  • Considered writing until a write returns -1. That also passes a build that reports the rejected send() as 4.
Notes

CI. I read the annotations of builds 127114 to 128913 (1589 builds have annotations). The test is in 7 of them: 127333, 127340, 128086, 128173, 128190, 128718, 128744. Build 128190 is red for it. In the other six the file passed on a retry (127333 needed three). Every failure is the tcp case, on a darwin-x64-14.8.9-1 agent, between 07:55Z and 13:27Z, and the test took 31 ms to 41 ms. The output is the same each time:

"closed": true,
"received": "hello and bye",
"writes": [
-   -1,
-   -1,
+   4,
+   4,
],

Both send() calls succeeded, so bun reported what the kernel did.

The second test. a write that is the first to observe the peer's reset fails with a write error in node-tls-connect.test.ts, for tls.connect({ port }) and tls.connect({ socket }). It and the tls case of the first test are not in the annotations of these builds. The fixture has the same hole, and the reproduction below shows the failure it leads to.

Reproduction on Linux. Linux normally applies the RST before terminate() returns, so the race does not show there. To get the macOS order, a scratch parent ran the fixture text of each test file unchanged, reported first, and reset 100 ms later. Debug build of main 91e7e3b, 5 of 5 runs each:

socket.test.ts, old fixture   tcp  {"writes":[4,4],"received":"hello and bye","closed":true}
socket.test.ts, old fixture   tls  {"writes":[4,4],"received":"hello and bye","closed":true}
socket.test.ts, new fixture   tcp  {"writes":[-1,-1],"received":"hello and bye","closed":true}
socket.test.ts, new fixture   tls  {"writes":[-1,-1],"received":"hello and bye","closed":true}
node-tls-connect, old fixture port    {"write":"ok","events":["error:ECONNRESET:read"],"hadError":true}
node-tls-connect, old fixture socket  {"write":"ok","events":["error:ECONNRESET:read"],"hadError":true}
node-tls-connect, new fixture port    {"write":{"code":"ECONNRESET","syscall":"write"},"events":["error:ECONNRESET:write"],"hadError":true}
node-tls-connect, new fixture socket  {"write":{"code":"ECONNRESET","syscall":"write"},"events":["error:ECONNRESET:write"],"hadError":true}

The tests keep their purpose. With bun 1.4.3-canary (367d939, before #44618) the changed tests still fail for the original reason: [-104, -32] for tcp, [4, 0] for tls, and "write": "ok" with a clean end for node:tls.

The probe.

  • macOS, xnu-10063.141.1 (macOS 14) and xnu-12377.1.9: a valid RST runs tcp_close(), which calls soisdisconnected() (bsd/netinet/tcp_subr.c). That sets SS_CANTRCVMORE | SS_CANTSENDMORE. getpeername() returns EINVAL for a socket with both flags (bsd/kern/uipc_syscalls.c, "the socket has been shutdown, no more getpeername's"), and sosendcheck() returns EPIPE. Both run under the socket lock. getpeername() does not touch so_error. I read the source and did not run it on a Mac myself. CI build 128989 ran the tests there: socket.test.ts 188 pass and node-tls-connect.test.ts 353 pass on darwin x64 (macOS 14.8.9), darwin aarch64 (macOS 26.6) and darwin 27 aarch64. If getpeername() did not fail after the RST, these tests would time out.
  • Linux 6.1, run at the syscall level: after the peer's RST, getpeername() returns ENOTCONN two times, then send() returns ECONNRESET, then EPIPE, and recv() still returns the bytes that arrived before the RST.
  • remotePort is undefined when getpeername() fails. socket.localPort / socket.remotePort return undefined when the underlying fd is gone in the same file covers that.
  • node:tls caches socket.remotePort after the first read, so that fixture reads the native handle (socket._handle.remotePort).
  • Windows: I could not run it. Wine's ws2_32 conformance tests expect getpeername() to succeed on a socket whose connect() is still pending and after shutdown(), so the call probably does not follow the connection's state. If it keeps succeeding after a reset, the wait would run to its deadline, so Windows does not use it.

If the RST is answered with an ACK. xnu accepts an RST in ESTABLISHED only when its sequence number equals last_ack_sent (RFC 5961). Otherwise it sends an ACK, and the reply to that ACK is a second RST. In this test the ACK for the bytes before the RST is not delayed (tcp_cc_delay_ack needs t_forced_acks == 0, which takes 16 pure ACKs). If it were, the wait also covers the second RST.

Not covered. An RST that is lost is not sent again. The child then waits until the test times out. Nothing in CI points to that.

Left alone. a session over TLS whose peer reset is first seen by a write ends without a hang in node-http2.test.js has the same fixture, but its assertions accept both outcomes.

Suites. Linux debug build: the two changed tests 10 of 10 runs each. Whole files: socket.test.ts 188 pass, 1 fail. node-tls-connect.test.ts 349 pass, 4 fail. Those failures need hosts outside this container (www.example.com and others) and are the same without the change. Some whole-file runs, with and without the change, also have 5 s timeouts in other tests (a different test each time, debug build).

no test proof · iteration 0 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/node/tls/node-tls-connect.test.ts, test/js/bun/net/socket.test.ts

"write() that is the first to observe the peer's reset returns -1" in
socket.test.ts fails now and then on the darwin x64 lane with
writes: [4, 4]. The child wrote as soon as the parent reported that it
sent the RST. On macOS a kernel thread delivers loopback packets, so
the child's kernel can apply the RST after that report, and send()
still succeeds.

The child now also waits until socket.remotePort is undefined.
getpeername() fails once the kernel has reset the socket, and it does
not consume the socket's error. Windows keeps the file as its only
signal.

"a write that is the first to observe the peer's reset fails with a
write error" in node-tls-connect.test.ts has the same fixture and gets
the same wait.

Status: the change is pushed and waits for CI and review.

How it was reproduced: I have no macOS machine, so I reproduced the order of events on Linux. A scratch parent ran the unchanged fixture text of each test, reported the reset first, and reset the connection 100 ms later. On a debug build of main the old fixture gives writes: [4, 4] (the CI output) in 5 of 5 runs, and the new fixture gives [-1, -1] in 5 of 5 runs. The macOS lanes of this PR run the real tests.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

LGTM — a test-only de-flake that adds a bounded poll on a live getpeername() before the write that must fail, with the original assertions left intact; the inline comment is a style nit only.

Extended reasoning...

The change adds 16 lines to two child-process fixtures in test/js/bun/net/socket.test.ts and test/js/node/tls/node-tls-connect.test.ts and touches no production code or security-sensitive surface. I traced Bun's remotePort getter through socket_body.rs get_remote_port -> uws_sys remote_port -> us_socket_remote_port -> bsd_remote_addr, which calls getpeername() on every access and maps failure to undefined, so the new loop polls a real kernel signal and does not consume SO_ERROR. In the node:tls fixture, Socket.prototype.remotePort caches via _peername, so reading _handle.remotePort is necessary; for tls.connect({ socket }) adoptTLSPair sets _handle to the TLS Bun socket (same live getter), and if the engine-upgrade path were taken instead the missing property would just skip the loop rather than throw. The loop shares the existing 30s deadline, is gated off on win32 with a stated reason, and the assertions are unchanged, so the test still fails for its original reason; no CODEOWNER covers these files and the only finding is a comment-duplication nit.

Walkthrough

Two reset-write tests now wait for the local kernel to apply the peer’s TCP reset before writing on non-Windows platforms. Both tests skip this wait on Windows.

The two fixtures carried the same paragraph. Each now has one line
that says what remotePort is and points at the pull request. The
node:tls fixture reads socket._handle.remotePort in the loop.

LGTM — a small, test-only de-flake whose premise checks out against the implementation, and the second commit addresses the earlier comment-length note.

What was reviewed:

  • Confirmed remotePort is an uncached getter (sockets.classes.ts) that reaches getpeername() via us_socket_remote_port and yields undefined on failure, for both the TCP and TLS Bun.connect sockets.
  • Confirmed node:tls _handle.remotePort hits the same native getter in both variants: the direct-connect handle and the pair[1] TLS half adopted in adoptTLSPair for tls.connect({ socket }); socket.remotePort would not work there because _getpeername() caches _peername.
  • The new loop is a bounded poll sharing the existing 30s deadline; assertions are unchanged on every platform, and the win32 branch only skips the extra wait rather than loosening the expected result.
Extended reasoning...

The diff adds a four-line bounded poll to the child fixture of two existing tests (test/js/bun/net/socket.test.ts and test/js/node/tls/node-tls-connect.test.ts) and touches no production code or security-sensitive surface. The wait relies on remotePort becoming undefined once the kernel has applied the peer's RST, which I verified from source: the getter is uncached, calls getpeername() through us_socket_remote_port/bsd_remote_addr, and maps a failure to undefined, and the node:tls _handle in both the direct and adopted-pair variants is the same native socket class. The existing assertions are unchanged on all platforms, the change is small and self-contained, the prior comment-length feedback was addressed by the second commit, the hunt ran dry, and no CODEOWNERS entry covers these files.

Stop before writing when the reset is not observed.

On POSIX, the loop exits when either socket.remotePort becomes undefined or deadline expires. If the deadline expires first, socket.remotePort remains defined and the unconditional writes can run before the reset. This preserves the ordering race that can produce successful writes instead of the expected failures.

Fail when the POSIX reset is not observed.

If the deadline expires while socket._handle.remotePort remains defined, the loop exits and socket.write() can run before the reset reaches the child. Stop the fixture instead of performing the write in that state.
