….0.0 Ruff stays pinned in lockstep across pyproject's dev extra, the pre-commit rev, and the CI install step. ruff >= 0.16 also formats Python code blocks inside Markdown, which would reformat 7 hand-aligned docs/ plans; scope the format gate back to Python-only via [tool.ruff.format] exclude = ["*.md"]. Before: ruff was pinned to 0.14.10 in the three lockstep places (pyproject's
devextra, the.pre-commit-config.yamlrev, and the CI install step), and pre-commit-hooks was on v5.0.0. Everything else is either unpinned (runtime deps resolve to latest) or already current (actions/checkout@v7,actions/setup-python@v7,release-please-action@v5, and Dependabot handles Actions anyway).After: ruff is pinned to 0.16.10 in all three places, and pre-commit-hooks is on v6.0.0. ruff 0.16 also formats Python code blocks inside Markdown, which would have reformatted 7 hand-aligned plan/spec docs under
docs/. A new[tool.ruff.format] exclude = ["*.md"]keeps the format check limited to Python, the same as under 0.14. No.pyfile changes.Summary
Dependency bump. No repo has a lockfile and the runtime deps have open bounds, so the only things to bump are the pinned dev tools.
Bumped
ruff0.14.10 -> 0.16.10 (pyproject.tomldev extra,.pre-commit-config.yamlrev,.github/workflows/ci.ymlinstall step, and theCONTRIBUTING.mdsetup command)pre-commit/pre-commit-hooksv5.0.0 -> v6.0.0 (the hooks used are trailing-whitespace, end-of-file-fixer, check-yaml, check-json and check-added-large-files, and none of them were removed in v6)Held back

Testing
Run locally on Python 3.11 with the same packages CI installs, plus ffmpeg and DejaVu:
ruff check .is green ("All checks passed!", on both 0.14.10 at base and 0.16.10)ruff format --check .is green ("55 files already formatted"; without the md exclude, 0.16.10 reported "7 files would be reformatted", all indocs/*.md)pytestis green: 1760 passed, 1 skipped (same counts at base)pre-commit run --all-filesfails trailing-whitespace and end-of-file-fixer on fixtures intests/data/syw/. This already happens at base on v5.0.0 and is not caused by this PR. pre-commit is not part of CI.pip-auditlists nothing for the project's deps. Its only findings were the throwaway venv's own bootstrappip/setuptools, which are not repo deps.Risk / blast radius
None for runtime. Only lint and format tooling changed, and no renderer invariants were touched. The one behavior change is that ruff 0.16 would start formatting Markdown, and the format exclude switches that off.
