I'm tinkering with the 'Workflows' functionality but I'm not getting the variables to pass downstream.
To my understanding this was added in version 2.18 based on the roadmap:

Reading the documentation, setting variables with 'set_stats' should automatically pass them downstream, but I'm not able to reference the variable in my downstream nodes.

"When an Ansible task in a workflow uses set_stats, the variables are stored as workflow artifacts for that run. Downstream task nodes in the same run receive them as extra variables automatically."
