VMaaS uses database-backed state and the separate named volume
iop-service-vmaas-data, so developers can determine whether to provision it;
keep the other services’ storage classifications unchanged.
- Around line 37-38: Update the named-volume ownership statement in the
developer storage documentation to qualify automatic ownership initialization as
version- and state-dependent, applying only to eligible new volumes on first
mount. Note that populated or restored volumes may retain existing ownership,
and advise checking ownership and using the :U mount option only when recursive
adjustment is intended.
- Line 124: Clarify the named-volume statement in the storage documentation: say
that named volumes avoid ownership-mapping issues only within the same Podman
storage context, and that switching between rootful and rootless contexts
requires migrating the data. Do not imply that a same-named volume preserves or
carries data across storage roots.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
One thing about it - Do you think if we can distinguish running processes as non-root inside containers from running Podman rootless maybe here? bcs foremanctl currently uses rootful Podman, while here it SAT-45813 focuses on non-root users inside containers.
So I see named volumes also do not provide UID/GID remapping by themselves. I think rootless Podman migration and the /etc/subuid and /etc/subgid requirements should be described separately.

This part of the statement is speculation and I'm not sure it serves our documentation to talk about what might be if it never comes to pass. I think I understand your goal here is to "future proof" bind mounts through some good rules of thumb. If that is the case, I would just make these top-level rules of persistent storage that is stated further up in the document with the rest.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Yes, that makes sense. My intention was to avoid implying that named volumes provide UID/GID remapping or documenting guidance that works only with the current rootful deployment, and not to assume that a rootless Podman migration will definitely happen. But thanks for pointing this out.

Also could we clarify that arbitrary Podman named volumes are not automatically included in the current foremanctl backup? For every new volume, we should either add it to backup and restore or explicitly document that its data can be recreated and does not require backup.

I find this section and the table confusing. This mixes multiple storage types for a given service and then it's unclear what the Notes section is referencing when there are multiple types of storage used. I'd just go for a more expressive, detailed list. Either consider doing it by service or by storage type. I'd lean towards the latter since this whole document is about storage types and that way anyone looking at it can see for each storage type what service is using that storage (and possibly why).
