Every Claude Code session loads CLAUDE.md in full. It was 6,108 lines (464 KB), and 79% of that was a "Current step" section made of entries for branches that have all merged. The last six, Saffsanity#74, Saffsanity#75, Saffsanity#77, Saffsanity#78, Saffsanity#79 and Saffsanity#80, were on main by 2026-10-16. This change moves that history out, so CLAUDE.md is now 1,288 lines.

What changed

  • History: the merged entries, with Milestones 1 and 2, move word for word to a new docs/HISTORY.md. Noah's untested lists go with them.
  • Current step: now says nothing is open, and says to move an entry to the history once it merges.
  • Working rules: a new section keeps the standing rules those entries held, unchanged: the shared hardware encoder, host code and the modal-loop rule, TCC, build facts, never reconfiguring a running SCStream, and the known limitations.
  • Layout: the list of checks gains away-copy, away-quality, away-wire, keychain and link-judge, which exist in Tests/checks/ but were missing from it.
  • Conventions and Decisions: the threading convention no longer describes "the spike" or rules out actors, which the code already uses. The Bonjour line now says what shipped (pairing at home, the remote door) and leaves the iCloud decision as it was.
  • References: 18 comments that cited a moved section now cite docs/HISTORY.md. no-device.sh cites the Working rules instead, where its rule stayed. These are comment and doc edits only; no code changes.

Left as they are: the plans in docs/ that mention "CLAUDE.md's Current step". They record what each branch's docs commit did at the time, so they are still accurate.

Checks

  • Swift: not built or run; the session had no Swift toolchain. The only Swift changes are comments.
  • Python and shell scripts: they pass syntax checks, except Scripts/encoder-check/verify-hardware.sh. That one fails bash -n on Linux both before and after this change, which only edits a comment in it. It is worth running bash -n on it on the Mac.

Generated by Claude Code

Every session loads CLAUDE.md whole, and 79% of it (6,108 lines) was a
"Current step" made of entries for branches that have all merged, the last
six (Saffsanity#74, Saffsanity#75, Saffsanity#77, Saffsanity#78, Saffsanity#79, Saffsanity#80) by 2026-10-16. Their entries, with
Milestones 1 and 2, move word for word to docs/HISTORY.md. CLAUDE.md keeps
a Current step that says nothing is open, and a Working rules section with
the standing rules those entries held, unchanged: the shared encoder,
the host code and modal-loop rules, TCC, build facts, SCStream, and the
known limitations. 1,288 lines.

Also: the Layout's list of checks gains away-copy, away-quality,
away-wire, keychain and link-judge, which exist; the threading convention
and the Bonjour decision no longer describe the spike. Comments and docs
that cited a moved section now cite docs/HISTORY.md (no-device.sh cites
the Working rules, where its rule stayed).
