Summary of changes

Unsupported/invalid values in OTEL_PROPAGATORS (e.g. jaeger, ottrace, xray,
typos) are now dropped with a warning that names them. If no supported value
remains, the default propagators are used, as when the variable is unset.

Reason for change

Today invalid/unsupported propagators are accepted silently: a mixed config like
tracecontext, baggage, jaeger loses jaeger without any log, and a config made
only of unsupported values (OTEL_PROPAGATORS=jaeger) leaves the tracer with no
injectors or extractors, so propagation is silently disabled. Logging a warning + falling back if no valid propagators are left should make onboarding OTel customers easier.
(+theoretically, OTel spec requires unrecognized propagators to be ignored with a warning).

Jira: APMAPI-2623

Implementation details

  • The OTEL_PROPAGATORS validator in TracerSettings now requires at least one
supported propagator (one SpanContextPropagatorFactory can create, or
none). Otherwise the existing override path applies the defaults, logs the
    invalid-configuration warning and records OpenTelemetryConfigInvalid.
  • Unsupported values are filtered from the selected value after source
resolution, not in the converter, which runs once per source and would
    report values from unused sources.
  • OverrideErrorLog.LogUnsupportedValues queues the warning and records
OpenTelemetryConfigInvalid. It also runs when DD_TRACE_PROPAGATION_STYLE*
    hides OTEL_PROPAGATORS.

Test coverage

  • TracerSettingsTests: new cases for PropagationStyleInject /
PropagationStyleExtract, plus warning tests for unsupported values and
    for source selection.
  • Existing Test_OTEL_PROPAGATORS::test_invalid_{is_ignored|value_logs_warning} now pass

Benchmarks

Benchmark execution time: 2026-10-26 10:41:06

Comparing candidate commit 15bfd58 in PR branch milan.garnier/apmapi-2623-otel-propagators-invalid with baseline commit 3107870 in branch master.

📊 Benchmarking dashboard

Found 0 performance improvements and 2 performance regressions! Performance is the same for 70 metrics, 0 unstable metrics, 16 known flaky benchmarks, 110 flaky benchmarks without significant changes.

Explanation

This is an A/B test comparing a candidate commit's performance against that of a baseline commit. Performance changes are noted in the tables below as:

  • 🟩 = significantly better candidate vs. baseline
  • 🟥 = significantly worse candidate vs. baseline

We compute a confidence interval (CI) over the relative difference of means between metrics from the candidate and baseline commits, considering the baseline as the reference.

If the CI is entirely outside the configured SIGNIFICANT_IMPACT_THRESHOLD (or the deprecated UNCONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD), the change is considered significant.

Feel free to reach out to #apm-benchmarking-platform on Slack if you have any questions.

More details about the CI and significant changes

You can imagine this CI as a range of values that is likely to contain the true difference of means between the candidate and baseline commits.

CIs of the difference of means are often centered around 0%, because often changes are not that big:

---------------------------------(------|---^--------)-------------------------------->
                              -0.6% 0% 0.3% +1.2%
                                 | | |
lower bound of the CI --' | |
sample mean (center of the CI) -------------' |
upper bound of the CI ----------------------'

As described above, a change is considered significant if the CI is entirely outside the configured SIGNIFICANT_IMPACT_THRESHOLD (or the deprecated UNCONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD).

For instance, for an execution time metric, this confidence interval indicates a significantly worse performance:

----------------------------------------|---------|---(---------^---------)---------->
                                       0% 1% 1.3% 2.2% 3.1%
                                                  | | | |
       significant impact threshold --------------' | | |
                      lower bound of CI --------------' | |
sample mean (center of the CI) --------------------------' |
                      upper bound of CI ----------------------------------'

Bits Code Review: FAIL

With the default composite configuration source, OTEL_PROPAGATORS=jaeger falls back to defaults but emits neither the promised warning nor the OpenTelemetryConfigInvalid metric.

P2 Preserve invalid propagators through composite source resolution

With the default composite configuration source and only OTEL_PROPAGATORS=jaeger configured, this validator rejects the value. CompositeConfigurationSource.GetAs discards invalid results and returns NotFound when no source validates, so the new IsPresent branch never emits the promised warning or OpenTelemetryConfigInvalid metric. Propagation falls back to defaults silently. Preserve invalid presence when no source validates while retaining fallback to valid lower-priority sources, and cover the unsupported-only composite case. This requires changes beyond a localized replacement in this diff.

  • 👎 Wrong: the finding is incorrect, for example the bug can't happen or the code was misread.
  • 😕 Unclear: you can't tell what it means or why it matters.
  • 👀 Right, not acting: correct, but intended, out of scope for this PR, a known risk, or too minor.
