Summary of changes

CompositeConfigurationSource now returns the highest-priority invalid result (ValidationFailure / ParsingError) when no source has a valid value, instead of NotFound. A valid value from any source still wins over an invalid one.

This makes production follow the invalid-input handling that settings code and unit tests already expect. New behavior, by category:

1. Warnings for unsupported or invalid input

  • OTEL_PROPAGATORS: together with [Configuration] Ignore unsupported OTEL_PROPAGATORS values with a warning #9515, a value with only unsupported propagators (e.g. jaeger) logs a warning before falling back to the defaults.
  • Other invalid OTEL_* values (OTEL_LOG_LEVEL other than debug, OTEL_SDK_DISABLED, OTEL_METRICS_EXPORTER, OTEL_LOGS_EXPORTER, OTEL_TRACES_EXPORTER) log a warning too, as does an invalid DD key set next to its OTel equivalent.

2. Telemetry

  • OpenTelemetryConfigInvalid and OpenTelemetryConfigHiddenByDatadogConfig are recorded, and configuration telemetry ends with the value actually in use.

3. Behavior on invalid input

  • An invalid DD_APPSEC_AUTO_USER_INSTRUMENTATION_MODE or DD_APPSEC_AUTOMATED_USER_EVENTS_TRACKING disables user tracking.
  • An invalid DD key (e.g. DD_TRACE_ENABLED, DD_TRACE_SAMPLE_RATE) hides its OTel equivalent, and a key that fails validation no longer falls back to its aliases, like with a single source.

Reason for change

Production settings always read through GlobalConfigurationSource, which is a CompositeConfigurationSource. It dropped every invalid result, so callers could never see IsPresent && !IsValid, and the code written for that case never ran. Unit tests use a single NameValueConfigurationSource, which keeps the invalid result, so they didn't catch it.

Impact in production today, by category (importance in brackets):

1. No warning for unsupported or invalid input

  • [High] OTEL_PROPAGATORS: [Configuration] Ignore unsupported OTEL_PROPAGATORS values with a warning #9515 rejects values that contain only unsupported propagators, such as jaeger, ottrace or xray, and warns about them. Without this fix that warning never fires, and propagation falls back to the defaults without any message, which can silently break distributed traces with services using other propagators.
  • [Medium/Low] No warning for the other invalid OTEL_* values either, notably OTEL_LOG_LEVEL where only debug is supported, nor for an invalid DD key set next to its OTel equivalent.

2. Telemetry

  • [Medium/Low] OpenTelemetryConfigInvalid is never recorded, OpenTelemetryConfigHiddenByDatadogConfig is missing when the DD key is invalid, and configuration telemetry reports the rejected value instead of the default in use.

3. Behavior on invalid input

  • [High] An invalid DD_APPSEC_AUTO_USER_INSTRUMENTATION_MODE (or the deprecated DD_APPSEC_AUTOMATED_USER_EVENTS_TRACKING) turns on user tracking in identification mode instead of disabling it, which collects user data the customer likely meant to restrict.
  • [Medium/Low] An invalid DD key is treated as unset: the OTel equivalent applies instead (e.g. DD_TRACE_ENABLED=abc + OTEL_TRACES_EXPORTER=none disables tracing, an unparseable DD_TRACE_SAMPLE_RATE lets the OTel sampler apply), and aliases are tried after a failed validation.

Implementation details

In each getter, a present-but-invalid result replaces the current result while no valid one has been found. Sources are iterated from lowest to highest priority, so the highest-priority invalid result is kept. Telemetry recording is unchanged.

Test coverage

  • SettingsTestsBase.CreateConfigurationSource now wraps its source in a CompositeConfigurationSource, so all settings tests built on it run the production path.
  • New CompositeConfigurationSourceTests.ReturnsHighestPriorityInvalidResult_WhenNoSourceIsValid, and Telemetry_WhenErrorRecordsTelemetry updated to expect ParseFailure.
  • New SecuritySettingsTests.UserEventsAutoInstrumentationMode, and a MutableSettingsTests.TraceEnabled case for an invalid DD_TRACE_ENABLED next to OTEL_TRACES_EXPORTER=none, both through the composite source.

Other details

Found while working on #9515.

Existing tests already encode this behavior, and now apply in production too: with an invalid DD_RUNTIME_METRICS_ENABLED and OTEL_METRICS_EXPORTER=none, the OTel key is reported as hidden, but none still disables runtime metrics (TracerSettingsTests.RuntimeMetricsEnabled).

Benchmarks

Benchmark execution time: 2026-10-26 15:02:41

Comparing candidate commit 549ceb6 in PR branch milan.garnier/composite-config-keep-invalid with baseline commit 3107870 in branch master.

📊 Benchmarking dashboard

Found 0 performance improvements and 0 performance regressions! Performance is the same for 72 metrics, 0 unstable metrics, 13 known flaky benchmarks, 113 flaky benchmarks without significant changes.

Explanation

This is an A/B test comparing a candidate commit's performance against that of a baseline commit. Performance changes are noted in the tables below as:

  • 🟩 = significantly better candidate vs. baseline
  • 🟥 = significantly worse candidate vs. baseline

We compute a confidence interval (CI) over the relative difference of means between metrics from the candidate and baseline commits, considering the baseline as the reference.

If the CI is entirely outside the configured SIGNIFICANT_IMPACT_THRESHOLD (or the deprecated UNCONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD), the change is considered significant.

Feel free to reach out to #apm-benchmarking-platform on Slack if you have any questions.

More details about the CI and significant changes

You can imagine this CI as a range of values that is likely to contain the true difference of means between the candidate and baseline commits.

CIs of the difference of means are often centered around 0%, because often changes are not that big:

---------------------------------(------|---^--------)-------------------------------->
                              -0.6% 0% 0.3% +1.2%
                                 | | |
lower bound of the CI --' | |
sample mean (center of the CI) -------------' |
upper bound of the CI ----------------------'

As described above, a change is considered significant if the CI is entirely outside the configured SIGNIFICANT_IMPACT_THRESHOLD (or the deprecated UNCONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD).

For instance, for an execution time metric, this confidence interval indicates a significantly worse performance:

----------------------------------------|---------|---(---------^---------)---------->
                                       0% 1% 1.3% 2.2% 3.1%
                                                  | | | |
       significant impact threshold --------------' | | |
                      lower bound of CI --------------' | |
sample mean (center of the CI) --------------------------' |
                      upper bound of CI ----------------------------------'

P2 Badge Extract the repeated invalid-result selection

The same priority-selection block is now duplicated across all six getters, so a future change to the composite precedence contract can silently diverge by value type. Extract this into a private generic helper and keep the selection rule in one place, as required by MAINT-1.2.

Valid values still override invalid values from any source, while all-invalid lookups retain the highest-priority failure for settings’ existing fallback and warning paths.
